Katie was hard at work in her lab, trying to finish up a project she had been working on all day. Tools were scattered about her work space, as notes and blueprints lay scattered and disorganized in a clutter. Diagrams of what she was working on were scribbled on a whiteboard in such a way that only she could make any sense of. Soon the otter girl let out a sigh of relief as she wiped her forehead and began putting the finishing touches, taking some needle and thread to stitch together what could only be described as a simple looking cloth diaper.
"There, finally finished, now to make sure this thing works" she says to herself as she turns to her computer
With a few keystrokes, the computer begins displaying several lines of code rapidly across the screen scrolling through diagnostics, before displaying a single word.
"Initiating" read the computer
In an instant Katie looked over at the diaper on her lab table hoping that it would work. She waited a couple minutes as nothing happened, she sighed and was a about to turn to her computer to recheck her notes before the diaper suddenly got up on its own. The diaper stood there supporting itself on its velcro tabs and turned to Katie, who was sitting in her chair diaperless. In an instant the diaper wasted no time in leaping of the table and moved forward to the otter girl in a walking sort of motion and leapt up onto her chair. With an excited squeal, Katie lifted her butt off the chair some for the diaper to lay itself under her, before it began to fold itself up around her and fastened its tabs around her securely.
"YES! IT WORKS!" Katie exclaimed in excitement, "I gotta show this to someone, I can't wait to show it off!" Katie exclaimed jumping up onto her feet and ran off to the door to her room.
Pulling the door open the otter girl poked her head out into the hall of the castle and looked around for anyone who might be nearby. At that moment she saw Nina the ninetails walking on by, and without warning, the otter girl grabbed the vixen's arm and pulled her into her lab.
"Hey! What's the big idea!?" Nina exclaimed in surprise trying to make sense of what was going on
"Sorry sis, I just gotta show someone my newest invention, I'm just so excited about it!" Katie tried to answer simply
"All right, I check it out, so what did you make?" Nina asked looking at the excited otter girl
"This!" Katie exclaimed showing off her diaper
"A...." Nina trailed off for a moment giving the diaper an examining poke and feel, "cloth diaper? Ummm..... hate to break this to you but.....those already exist" Nina commented
"What? No, I mean yes, I mean.... it's not just a diaper, it's a self-changing and self-cleaning diaper!" Katie replied excitedly
"A what?" Nina asked in confusion trying to make sense of what Katie was saying
"It's a diaper that can change itself and clean itself" Katie answered
"Ummm..... how?" Nina asked scratching her head confused by how such a thing was possible.
"It's simple really, I used a some very flexible materials that are also very durable to handle any abuse it might receive while washing or drying or while being worn, it also had to be flexible enough to move about on its own but strong enough to do so. I used a bunch of polymers and synthetics to fabricate a special sort of circuit board" Katie explained nerding out as she began to lose her audience.
Nina just stared at Katie wide eyed with a blank expression as her brain was trying its best to keep up Katie unable to make sense of anything she was saying at this point.
"Ummm....everything all right?" Katie asked noticing Nina's expression
"Ummm....Katie.....no offense or anything but I'm not like you or Sumia, any way you can explain this in english?" Nina asked as she snapped out of it
"Oh...sorry, I was doing it, again wasn't I?" Katie asked blushing
"Well yes" Nina replied "It's fine but I'm not big on all this science stuff so I can't really follow along with what you are saying too well" Nina added
"Ummm oh! I have some notes on my whiteboard that might help" Katie responded before running to the whiteboard and turned it to her sister
Nina looked at it some curiously seeing a diagram of the diaper in question with several notes on it.
"I used a cloth diaper since disposable would be too wasteful for all the science I have to put in it, because it's cloth it can also be washed and cleaned" Katie began answering trying her best to keep it simple
"But wouldn't washing it damage the science stuff inside the diaper?" Nina asked
"Ah, glad you asked because I had the same thought" Katie replied pointing to a section of the diagram, "There is a coating of a special plastic inside the cloth material, to protect everything that makes it work, so it can get as wet as you can get it and it won’t get damaged" Katie explained, "It also has the added benefit of giving it a slight crinkle if you like that sort of thing" She added
"I see, sounds smart, so how does it change and clean itself" Nina asked
"Well the plastic is durable enough and the cloth is light enough for the diaper to support its own weight, I used velcro instead of pins or using a sort of tie on style of cloth so that the diaper can change itself more easily. it does all this with science stuff that detects when it needs to be changed and does so" Katie answers hoping Nina was keeping up
Nina nodded her head having a decent understanding so far.
"It can also affect the cloth diapers coloring and change the prints on it if desired, I haven't gotten around to that yet, I need to find someone to help me come up with some cute designs for that feature" Katie replied with a smile
"So.....how many of these did you make?" Nina asked
"well technically one" Katie simply answered
"Okay so you have to wait for it to clean itself before it puts itself back on around you?" the vixen asked confused
"No" Said Katie
"Then how?" Nina questioned scratching her head
"Okay this is where it gets a teeny bit tricky" Katie replied "I didn't want to make several myself so I built a device to make them, but not like a factory does, it’s sort of a deconstruction and reconstruction device" Katie tried to explain without nerding out again
"Ummm...." Nina tilted her head trying to even make sense of that
"You see there is a sort of lens in the front of the diaper, it houses a sort of constructor beam, that digitally constructs stuff, in this case, the beam will construct all the science stuff inside a new diaper which activates its programming to put itself on around me" Katie replied
"Ummmm so how does it even make stuff, I may not be a science geek but even I know some of the law of conservation of mass, I did still get good grades in it when I went to school" Nina responded
"Well remember how I said it's a deconstruction and reconstruction beam?" Katie asked
Nina nodded her head looking at the whiteboard
"The computer can build a new science thing for the new diaper, once it is finished it deconstructs the item, the diaper uses its reconstruction beam to build the science stuff into the new diaper and there you go, it's that simple" Katie replied, "I like to call digistruct, or digital construction"
"Our definitions of simple are very VERY different sis" Nina replied
"Well Simple for me any.." Katie started to say before there was a tearing sound as the diaper tore itself off of Katies waist.
Katie meeped in surprise and shock throwing her hands on down and curled her tail up between her legs trying to cover up.
"So, did you need a change already?" Nina asked looking at the diaper in amazement, as it stood up
"N-no!" Katie shouted trying to figure out what went wrong
The diaper soon began to change some as it began to form a face like print on the front of the diaper. Almost instantly afterwards, the diaper began using its beam on Nina’s diaper and soon it too tore itself off from around the vixen’s waist. Nina blushed a deep shade of crimson red as she covered up as best she could, curling her nine tails around her more effectively than Katie could. Before the two could do anything, the two diapers made a run for the still open door and ran out into the hall. Katie looked at Nina who had an unamused look on her face still blushing.
"Katie..... care to explain what happened there?" Nina asked hoping she wouldn't be seen like this
"I...I don't know what happened, it wasn't supposed to do that, it was sentient enough to change and clean itself" She began saying aloud
"Sentient? Not programmed?" Nina asked
"Well....yes?" Katie asked still blushing
"Didn't mom tell you not to make sentient life in here?" Nina asked
"Well I thought that only applied to anything organic, this was just a diaper" Katie replied defensively
"So....you do realize that our diapers just ran out into a castle full of us girls who also wear diapers right?" Nina asked pointing out that fact
Katie just meeped and quickly grabbed a couple replacement diapers and quickly changed into one while throwing the other at Nina.
"We gotta stop them before mom finds out!" Katie exclaimed in a panic
"You mean before they turn everyone else's diapers sentient and leave them naked?" Nina asked
"Th-that too!" Katie answered
"Think we should get Sumia in here to help out? I mean she is supposed to be good with this kind of stuff, right?" Nina asked getting her new diaper on
"You do have a point, let's just hope she isn't away or anything" Katie replied
Sapphire the blue mew, was in Riola’s room, playing the white kitten, having a tea party together.
"More tea Mrs. Nesbit?" Sapphire asked looking at a plush bear sitting at the table with them
Pretending that the bear had said yes, the mew poured imaginary tea into the bears teacup and set the plastic teapot back down on the table. Just she did, both kittens heard a crinkling sound enter the room. Turning to look at the source of the sound, they only saw Ninas diaper standing there.
"Ummm..... Riola... what did you put in that imaginary tea?" Sapphire asked blinking her eyes trying to make sure she wasn't hallucinating the sight
"Ummmm.... nothing? It's fake after all" Riola answered blinking as well
Upon the two of them blinking at the same time they both saw there were now two diapers, both Katies and Ninas diapers standing side by side.
"Riola....there's two of them now" Sapphire pointed out
"Hello?" the white kitten called out confused by the sight
The two diapers walked on up and wasted no time in in using their beams on the pairs of diapers bringing them to life. The pair shrieked in surprise as their diaper leapt off of them and began to run away from them/
"MY DIAPER!" Riola shrieked
"Stop them!" Sapphire yelled flying on after them to get them on back
As soon as, the mew got out the door, she found that the diapers had already vanished from sight, having slinked away into an open air vent to escape.
"Where did they go?" Sapphire asked looking around in a panic hoping to get their diapers back
"What did those diapers do to our diapers?" Riola asked
"Maybe Katie will know what's going on" mew suggested
"Good idea, Let's hurry up and go find her" Riola replied as the pair ran on off to Katie's room
The diapers crawled about inside the vents almost silently, save for the sounds of their crinkling echoing through the vents, confusing a raccoon girl, as she heard the crinkling from the vents.
"What the...?" Sierra asked peering into the floor vent in her room, "I swear there is some sort of crinkling in there but.... no, I have to imagining things, Riola is probably running around out in the halls somewhere"
The coon girl just sat down in a chair in her room and relaxed some before the crinkling grew louder to where she was certain that it was coming from the air vent, not the hall.
"I have to be imagining things... there's no way anyone could fit inside that vent, it's far too small" She replies getting up once more to look as she shook her head, "I have to imagining it"
Peering into the vent once more she saw a cloth diaper with a face on it staring right back at her. She flung herself back with a shriek of surprise before seeing a disposable diaper standing next to her with a face of its own staring at her diaper. Sierra tried to react but before she could pick herself on up, the diaper had turned the coon girls diaper sentient just like the others. As she stood on up, her diaper jumped off form around her and ran off with the other diaper. She couldn't help but stand there dumbstruck with what had just happened, before finally reacting.
"MOM!" She yelled running on out to head off to find their queen, Esmeralda.
"You didn't set up your computer to turn off the diapers?" Nina asked confused
"I never expected this to happen so....no" Katie replied realizing that would have been smart in hindsight
"Well nothing you can do about it now; did you get a hold of Sumia?" Nina asked
"Yes, she said she will be here in a few minutes to help with this problem" Katie replied
As the two talked they were soon approached by the queen who wasn't looking too happy.
"I just saw Sapphire and Riola run by my room naked chasing after a pair of diapers that seemed to be running around on their own, any chance you happen to know what's going on around here?" she asks
"Well.... an invention of mine went out of control" Katie admitted
"What invention?" She asked
"My sentient diaper? It's sort of making everyone's diapers sentient now" Katie further admitted
"What have I told you about making sentient life?" the queen asked
"It was more artificial intelligence?" Katie responded
"That isn't any better" Esmerelda replied "Once this is straightened out, I will have no choice but to ground you from your lab for this..." she began to explain before feeling something slide down her legs.
Nina and Katie watched as one of the diapers began running off with a pair of panties, as they did their best to not smirk or laugh at the sight.
"Okay here's how this goes, fix this mess and get my panties back and I will let this slide this one time" The queen replied walking away keeping her dress skirt on down
The two sighed in relief and looked at each other some puzzled.
"I thought that your diaper only worked on other diapers" Nina commented
"I thought it would but.... I guess it can affect any kind of underwear" Katie began to guess
"Let's hurry up and meet up with Sumia before they get out of the castle, we really don't need these diapers making an even bigger mess of things" Nina replied, "Where was she going to meet us?" She asked
"The entrance hall, she should be there right now" Katie replied
The pair ran off as fast as they could trying to avoid running into any other diapers as they made their way to Sumia. As they ran on off a door opened up as a coyote girl started to walk on out of her room only to see diapers running around and Sapphire and Riola chasing after them still. The coyote girl just closed her door slowly and silently not wanting to get mixed into whatever was going on out there with an expression of, 'nope'.
At the entrance hall, the former skunk girl princess just watched everything going on as she had pinned down one of the rogue diapers with her wrench as it laid on the ground motionless.
"They weren't kidding when they told me they were having some trouble here, least it's not too bad" She commented to herself as the pair ran on up to her
"Thank you for coming, sorry to bother you like this but..... I don't think I can fix this on my own" Katie said to her
"It's fine, it's the least I can do to help out around here, though I have to ask, how did you even make this possible?" Sumia asked trying to get an idea of what's going on
Katie began telling the skunk girl everything, as Nina could only watch as the two began nerding out on all the complexities of Katies invention, as Nina could only see the skunk girl nod her head as she seemed to understand everything Katie was telling her.
"Hmmmm.... call me crazy but I have a theory I would like to try out" Sumia responded after hearing everything Katie had to say
"What is it?" Katie asked
"Well.... it's a stretch but if it works it could save us all a lot of trouble" Sumia started to respond, "If we deal with the original diaper, i.e. yours, the others might stop as well" She replied
"Hmmm.... I never thought about that, but you might be onto something there" Katie said pondering
"What did the original diaper look like?" Sumia asked
"It was a cloth diaper, so it should be the odd one out" Katie answered
Sumia pondered a moment before summoning her drones to help her search for it.
"These should help, once we find it I can shut it down" Sumia said watching the drones fly off in search
"Let's hope this works" Katie commented placing her confidence in Sumia.
The trio waited a bit wondering how long it would take, till there was some clanging and banging coming from the vents. They tried to follow the sounds as they grew louder and louder, before all of a sudden, they saw the cloth diaper fall from a ceiling vent and fell flat on the ground. Sumia didn't give the diaper a chance to get on up before pinning to the ground with her wrench.
"Now, I want you and the others to shut down already" Sumia told the diaper as her wrench glowed some for a bit
Katie and Nina watched waiting to see if her plan would work, as the diaper glowed along its circuitry, before going limp and lifeless once more. Riola and Sapphire watched as the diapers they were chasing after soon fell to the ground, ceasing their movements, as did Sydney's diaper and Esmeraldas panties, as it seemed like the plan had worked.
"Well that should take care of that" Sumia replied pulling the wrench off the diaper. As she did though, it began to move a bit once more trying to return to life, but was pinned once more by the wrench, "Don't make me tell you again" She warned the diaper looking like she was staring it down.
The diaper went limp once more, this time for good as it finally resumed being a normal diaper once more.
"Next time..... be sure to put a failsafe in your inventions, who knows what would have happened if I hadn't been here" Sumia replied picking up the cloth diaper and handed it back to Katie, "But I have to ask, if you wanted a self-changing diaper, why didn't you fix that diaper changing machine of yours?"
"Well I have it stashed in my failed inventions shed and well...it just seemed like it would be easier to make a self-changing diaper than to dig that out and figure out what's making it screwy" Katie answered
Sumia just sighed and shook her head, "Seriously?"
"Yes?" Katie answered questioningly
"Our definitions of easy are very different" Sumia commented
"THANK YOU!" Nina exclaimed hearing Sumia agree with her
