no.11: Mad Piano - Super Mario 64 (suggested by bestthe)
In 1996 there came a game so deceptively vile that it passed as a mere innocent play thing. From there it would sneak into the hearts of millions of children and stay in our collective nostalgia until the advent of the internet. It would be there that we would live the awful truth, that the very thing we grew up with and loved was nothing short of pure evil! I'm talking of course, about Super Mario 64... back then, we weren't forward thinking. It was a toy, nothing more. Of course, nowadays we see this game for what it is, a pioneer of the survival/horror genre! Naturally I couldn't turn down something so notable in paving the way for horror games, and especially not that of the Mad Piano who is easily the most crucial character in setting the mood for all of Super Mario 64!
Okay, so I don't get why Super Mario 64 is regarded as one of the most bone chilling video game experiences ever made nowadays! Sure, it's uncanny and has some liminal space vibes but at it's core it's still a Super Mario game! Still, the Mad Piano has always been a captivating element of that game to me if only for how strikingly overlooked it is. It came, did it's thing and never appeared again and may it stay that way. (unless we count Super Mario 64 DS, which we don't!)
So I dunno if this is true, but I've found basically 1 movie that had a killer piano in it: The 1977 Japanese film, 'House'.
It literally gobbles up one girl, but it's so absurd and weird, that it's almost hard to take it seriously. Interesting film though, should look into it! Does make me wonder if it inspired Super Mario 64...
