As for the last one...
Briar picks up MacCready pretty early... Their only lead is to find Nick Valentine, but they know for certain they can't take on a subway station full of toughs on their lonesome with just a baseball bat an enthusiastic dog. They head to Goodneighbor to get an idea of the kinda people they'll be up against.
They take a chance on talking to Hancock after he uhh "interferes" with Finn on Briar's behalf. "He's nice... kinda... more helpful than that suit in DC...I guess..." After asking more about him and his institute speech, they ask if he knows anyone who could help them out, even if just for money. Surprised and curious about this squishy baby of a person admitting to planning what could be a suicidal rescue mission. "Well, aint you a surprise, sister. Hmm.. I don't wanna make any promises.. but if were you? I'd talk to MacCready. If he's still looking for work he'll be at the bar. It'll cost ya though."
Unfortunately... Briar was not very well equipped to negotiate... thankfully MacCready is just as desperate as Briar... so it all worked out.
