Second….. hmmm. This is where, as a writer, I’m still somewhat unclear on the metaphysical aspect. “He was bonded on the day he died…… I’m sure he’s safe….” So when I look at reincarnation, past lives, etc, I look at it from the point of view of Continuity Of Consciousness. Will “reborn Vayle” be the same soul/spirit/entity/consciousness as the original fellow? Or will he just have strange affinities to things the original did (Kaha, etc). If the former, it raises all sorts of further possibilities (restoring his original persona, q.v Star Trek III)…. If the latter, then……. Why?

In Monumendo the soul is a spark of life. It doesn't retain consciousness or memories. Memories and personality are kept in the physical brain, which is 'inhabited' by the soul. Nethers retail the memories, experience and personality of their host, which are the aspects that made Vayle who he was. If Vayle is reborn, he'll be a new person, inheriting genetic memory and aspects from his parents.
But, hosts that are trained and have a strong enough bond can access their past lives through their Nether Dragons.
Nethers also protect the soul once the host dies, as their are entities in the Otherworld that feed on souls.
