India ink and a brush? I could give you a few tips for getting things inked as most of my work gets inked with a dip pen.

yeah! i use brushes mostly for washes. We could really uyse some tips because we're used to being able to press hard like with pencils, and having the pen nibs catch on the page really messes with our flow. .3.

Think of a nib like a brush, especially a flexible one. use downward strokes only and learn how the nib flexes and opens up. Use the same pressure you would with a brush and then add pressure slowly as you draw and watch how the line gets thicker. Also wash your nibs right away after use. Your best bet would be to try some of the Speedball B lettering nibs, they have a round tip that sits flat on the paper and can be used in any direction if you are not pushing too hard. The Speedball cartooning set is a great place to start as it has a few sizes of the B nibs from 1 (very broad) to 6 (very fine) along with a spoon nib and a Hunt 100 pen for flex and line variation. Also learning a bit about Gimp would be useful as then you can use a non-photo blue to sketch and edit it out in Gimp eliminating the chances of lifting your inks! Also consider your paper choice, a "plate" surface bristol board should help reduce catching although that really comes from proper technique where you don't "push" but rather "pull" the nib along the page.

We've been using your advice and it's been helping a lot! Unfortunately, we haven't had the money to buy new pen nibs or a smoother paper, most of the money we've had went straight into coloured ink. <.<" Thank you so much for the help, pulling instead of pushing made our line confidence a lot better ^w^

If you all are comfortable with it, I’d be interested to hear more about some of your headmates!

uhh yeah sure. will be warned though, there's 100+ of us (only those who want to be counted, there's even more if you don't count everybody) so there can be overlap between alters, and not every alter could be represented in a simple comment-reply structure ^^;
