I have seen it before actually; I remember looking it up because of a piece of fan art. :D I've grown fond of the idea for a long time. A bunch of photos: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=Lowland+Streaked+T... I would bet the designers at Sega got the idea for his hair from how their crest of spines looks like when it's raised.
Have a look at this: They spend most of their lives underground. They enjoy tight-knit family groups. But also forage alone. While they don't quite hibernate, they make their body grow inactive and lower its temperature in tough conditions to save energy.
And just cool: some of their spines can be rubbed together to make ultrasounds to communicate over distance. Convenient when one of your mission partners is a bat. (I would reckon Omega can be tuned to pick them up, too.)

O.o Wow... When you said you did your research you really weren't kidding. That is a very, very interesting concept, and, from what I've just seen and the pictures you just sent my way it makes a lot of sense. Not to mention the little details. Nice. Really nice. I'm not kidding, this is just cool. The only big downside is that Sega has made him officially a hedgehog, but you did bring up the possibility of genetic combination, and since hedgehogs are a convergent evolution - and that Gerald is a genius - there is a big chance that Shadow might be hedgehog with tenrec genes if everything is done correctly. Knowing Gerald, he would have taken no chance.
And that little detail about the ultrasound, very convenient, and I can definitely see it being applied. Shadow would definitely use that little detail to his advantage, and Omega could be tuned to hear them. And, if I'm not wrong, if Shadow his able to make those sounds, wouldn't he be able to hear them, too? Because if he actually does, then I'm pretty sure I'd know what their signal for emergencies would be.
