The young boy wandered into the dark woods alone, shivering from more than just the chill in the air. This place was strictly forbidden for children to play in and he knew he would be in big trouble if his mom and dad found out, but he didn't have a choice! His friends had dared him to go in the forest, to a nearby clearing, and chant the witch's name three times. If he didn't, he would be a big chicken and he would never live it down.
The witch. He shuddered at the thought. Sure, when he and his friends had been playing earlier, he had boasted that he wasn't afraid of the woods or the witch, (which led to the dare in the first place,) but of course he was! Everyone was!
According to the legends, a witch had lived in the forest for hundreds of years. Some stories said that she lured children away to bake them into pies. Others said she took the tongues and eyes of trespassers to use in the potions she brewed. Some said she would turn people into animals and force them to serve her. And there were legends she would sometimes creep into nearby villages to steal babies from their cribs, ruin marriages, spoil milk, set fires to crops, even raise the dead!
The boy shuddered again. He just wanted to run away from these dark woods and forget all about the stupid witch! He glanced back, considering it. Maybe he could even tell his friends he did the task. How would they even know?
Before he could make his decision, the snapping of a branch made him spin his head back around to the front. He looked for the source of the noise, but couldn't find it. He did find that he had arrived, however.
The trees all cleared away, creating a beautiful view of the night sky over the clearing. A single large, flat rock stood in the middle of the clearing, and the boy had the strangest feeling the trees were trying to huddle away from the imposing stone.
Now that he was here, there wasn't really an excuse not to complete his mission. The young boy climbed on top of the rock and looked up at the sky. Just as he'd been told in the stories, he chanted the witch's name three times to the stars, then waited.
...and nothing. No witch arrived to answer his summons. The boy sighed in relief, then started to laugh. Of course no witch came! There was no witch living in this stupid forest! He knew it all along.
He turned, ready to head back to his friends and rub his victory in her face, when there was a sudden explosion of light in front of him. He threw up his arms, covering his eyes and stumbled back. He lost his footing and fell back onto the hard stone. With a groan, he sat up and opened his eyes. What he saw nearly made him scream.
Standing in front of him was a beautiful kitsune! She was the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen! A strange candle floated above her hand, occasionally dropping embers that erupted into small bouts of fox fire that lit up the clearing. Her white dressed seemed to strain to contain the beautiful body it covered, the straps threatening to snap with her every breath. Her staff glowed softly in the moonlight.
There could be no doubt! This was the witch! He had really summoned her!
"Well, well," the fox spoke, her voice soft and melodious, "I wondered who would be trespassing in my woods. Tell me boy, why have you called me here?"
"I-I..." the boy stammered, shocked by this turn of events. "M-My friends d-dared me to come here a-and...and..."
"And summon forth the witch of the dark woods?" The vixen finished for him.
The boy nodded slowly in response.
Of course, the kitsune thought. Every so often some child or daredevil would come into her woods and summon her. Dares, feats of daring to impress significant others, people seeking her wisdom, she'd heard it all. She'd carefully cultivated the rumors of the terrible witch in the woods to help her preserve her privacy, but occasionally it did back fire.
Indeed, she had anticipated that was the reason the boy had entered her woods. She'd been following him ever since he entered, ensuring that he didn't get lost and nothing actually dangerous in the forest found him.
"Now," she chuckled, "what shall I do with you, my little trespasser?"
The boy screamed and darted into the woods.
She laughed, watching him. Her magic would see him safely out of the forest and his tales hopefully keep others from attempting anything similar for a while.
Fun little story for a beautiful kitsune sorceress! Let me know what you think!
