I recently came to the shocking realisation that I didn't have any art of a deer among all the pieces in my gallery, something that jolly well needed to be set right. Cue several interesting weeks imagining the practicalities of being a deer, how the presence of antlers might factor into their culture and lifestyles.
I ended up deciding that my deersona would be a fallow deer (dama dama), since I went for a lovely walk a few years back at nearby Petworth park, which has a great number of those fine cervines, reassuringly wary of letting people get too close.
Distinctive traits of that species include broad-ended palmate antlers and retaining their "fawn spots" even into adulthood. As nifty as hooves are, I just couldn't resist giving my character a similar setup to my sheep (whose feet have proven rather popular): hoofy nail coverings with soles and bare skin under the toes.
So say hello to a fine stag. When my antlers shed again feel free to ask for one as a little gift, while I enjoy the novelty of being able to wear t-shirts and hoodies, at least for a few months before my "branches" bloom again.
