Some lazy 3 am writing practice with a cliffhanger :3

"There you are!" I said, finding Austin at the edge of the river. The quiet bubbling of its Gallium filled the otherwise silent night scene. "We're going to miss the finale."
I stepped closer. Austin was looking into the distance at the valley's entrance, elbows resting on his knees. I sat down next to him on the riverside's grass, mirroring his pose.
"Do they repel or attract?"
"Mmh?" Austin turned his head towards me.
"The magnets. I know they'll stop the Gallium from flowing into the valley once it's cold enough. But what do they do to each other?"
"I... I don't know, actually," Austin said. "What do you think?"
"Attract, of course!"
"Why?" Austin asked, with a surprised look on his face.
"Because it's much more interesting that way. Y'know, if one of them ever falls."
"That's never going to happen, though," Austin said absentmindedly, again gazing at the distant row of giant magnets.
"So, are we going back or what?"
I edged a bit closer, waving my paw in front of his eyes. "Hello—. Ground station to Austin, we're going to miss the finale."
Austin sighed. "Sorry. I'm not sure I'm in the right mood for..." he trailed off.
"Is—something wrong?" Austin had moved a few centimeters away from me.
"W-What? No, I just... I suppose it's been a busy day," said Austin with a sigh.
"It's okay. I don't care that much about all those celebrations anyway," I said, looking at Austin. I dug my fingers into the grass. "I... I enjoy spending time with you much a lot more anyway."
I bit my lip. I looked down at my feet, my eyes closed. A breeze brushed my cheeks like ice cubes melting on lava. Leaves rustled, as I was holding my breath.
"They're probably going to start the firework soon," said Austin.
I opened my eyes and took a freh breath, trying not to gasp for air. Didn't he hear what I said?, I thought.
"We could... umm... watch it from the hill over there," I said, edging once more closer to Austin. He had moved away from me again. Why?
"So what's the deal with your interest in magnets all of the sudden?"
"They're really cool, 's all."
We sat in silence for a few minutes. A few flowers on the opposite shore had opened, bioluminescent rays focused by their reflective petals signaled their presence to insects. On the other end of town, the first rocket exploded. I turned my head in the direction of the bang, then to Austin, whose eyes remained fixed on the valley's magnets. Why does he look so sad?
I took a deep breath. "I... I want to tell you something," I said, looking at him. Austin turned to me, and I said "I... I like you."
For a brief moment, Austin's face lit up. Cheering him up was the best feeling in the world. He opened his mouth, but closed it again and looked away.
"Do... do you like me?"
"Yes," he whispered.
My heart jumped.
"But..." He stood up, and took a step away from me.
"... you're leaving, isn't it?" I said, standing up as well.
"How do you know about that?" Austin asked, frowning.
"Alan told me about it," I lied.
"Alan? Oh," said Austin, and I wondered if he believed me. "Tomorrow. We're departing at noon." His arms hung low as he looked at the grass between us.
"I know," I said, considering my next words. "So, if we like each other, then..."
"Then it's a good thing we'll never see each other."
I felt like I had run into a wall head-first. "What?" I took a step towards Austin, reaching out my paw, but he stepped back. I shook my head in disbelief. "But you like me. You just said that, right?"
I took another step, causing Austin to retreat two. "What?" I said, holding back tears. I ran towards him, and fell down when he dodged me.
"Ouch!"
"Are you alright?"
"I'll come with you!" I said, standing up. "Or I hide you here. Or we escape! If they find you we escape!"
He flinched, and looked around. Don't hold back. You need to convince him now.
"They can't force us to do anything. Look, what are they going to do? Our parents are going to yell. Whatever, I don't care."
"It's not that easy."
"But it is!" I said, and ran to him again. He dodged me again. Being prepared, I didn't fall.
"Even if they throw us in prison. I'm going to find a way to escape and then find you!"
"You would?" he asked. Before I could answer he said "It doesn't matter. You're too naive to understand."
"But... what?"
"Those a ridiculous plans, Kilian."
"But—"
"You're 11. And I... I'm fiftee—."
I had run so fast he didn't have time to dodge. We fell into the grass. Austin looked at me. My face centimeters above his, I kissed him.
