Hmm. The answer makes sense and gives new light to things. I did consider the possibility of the lessons being harsh for a reason, but having it clearly pointed out now helps. Obviously its going to be hard but its necessary in order to keep the trained pilots at a level where they wont risk their own and other people's lives each time they begin an approach.

Cool bit of information, and fun to see more of the story.

It also happens that landing is something a lot of students have problems with. But then there are some, like Adam, who just breeze through it. There are others who might do great on landing, but have trouble elsewhere down the line.

It's not only THEY would die or get hurt, if they have a catastrophic failure over a
city they could kill and / or injure hundreds. They NEED to know they can fail and
they have to respect that. For them Failure, literally, is NOT an option!

GOD I love your comic. It not only entertains but enlightens. I usually don't like
slice of life comics but yours is soo much more. If I haven't said that before I'll say
it now. :)

Y'know, sometimes you have to be reminded of the little things...well, not that saving lives is so little, in this case. You really do have to weed out those who aren't dedicated, sometimes, but you also have to make sure that those you're teaching are ready to handle things to where they do it with as few flaws as possible.

In general, you've got a great story going on that keeps me interested, you portray characters differently and makes me want to know more about them, and your overall style is appealing to view. Thank you again for another swell page and presentation.

Slightly off-topic, I wonder how many people in the furry fandom HAVE pilot's licenses. Second year (2002) for RainFurrest, the Seattle furcon, they began giving out metal logo pins to attendees (that year, it was flight wings with a pawprint in the center, flight-themed con). In years after, general got bronze and higher sponsors got silver or even gold, but in '08, the only people who got gold wings were those who presented valid licenses.
As far as I understand it, fourteen gold pins exist, and I've only met two who have them: the guest-of-honor was given one of each color pin, and the con chair that year has his license. I've got no idea how many, if any, attendees presented one, but con staff tells me that if you can show your '08 conbadge and a license you got since then, you get the pin.

There are a few, I see it mentioned on people's FA pages every once in a while that either they have their license or they're working on it. It's a small percentage though, just like it's a small percentage of the population in general. I'll do a journal and see what kind of responses I get.

It's been a week or two since I put up the 'who's a pilot?' question. Got similar responses between here and FA. Maybe a dozen people or so each who have either pilot's licenses or at least a little flight time.

Nice to hear. A local flight school offers first-time flights in which the person is allowed to do pretty much everything but the landing, with the trained pilot not using their controls unless necessary, and I'll probably give it a go just to say I've done it. Went along as a passenger when a friend did this.

I'm assuming you yourself have your license, hence the realism in the strip. I highly doubt I've got the mind (and I'm certain I don't have the funds) to get my license, but-- it was a blast just being in the plane, I figure it's twice the fun (or more) actually doing it. My friend kept trying to go, "Oh, uh, uhm, maybe you should take over now, I'm not so sure I'm doing this right--" and both the pilot and I would tell him to keep going anyway.

I've been doing it professionally for 12 years. It's lots of fun, but lots of work and yes, sadly it's very expensive and will probably be prohibitively expensive in the coming decades. But even if you just go up for an intro flight once, you'll never forget it. Save up $200 or so, and that should cover a little over an hour of flying and the instructor.

A school at the Renton Municipal Airport has introductory flights - what my friend did - that, I think, last an hour, for about $100. They fly over some pretty scenic areas, too, the wooded areas of east Bellevue and Issaquah. Very pretty. Nice clear views of downtown Bellevue and Seattle. I think it cost me $25 to ride along as a passenger. So I'll go do it next, and get another friend to ride along. Nice extra touch was that you can buy a flight log book and they'll enter your flight time in it, in case you do go for schooling.
