You're the new captain of a an old ship, 'The Adventure,' passed down from your father and his father before him. Your grandfather was a merchant, sailing and trading between nations. Your father took the money your grandfather had made and bought more ships and sailors to man them, creating a trading empire, but always helmed The Adventure. Now it was all yours.
Though as you stand on the dock, looking over the old, well worn ship, you consider just putting one of your men in charge of The Adventure and instead just stay back at the headquarters to take care of the business. You go through the available captains in your mind, trying to decide who would be best suited when you hear a soft voice behind you.
"Excuse me, sir."
You turn to find a young woman standing on the dock behind you, a mage by the symbol of the fastener on her cloak. She's one of the fox folk, wearing little more than the cloak and a hopeful look, one you recognize in people about to ask you for a favor.
"I'm told you're the captain of The Adventure," she says. You're about to correct her that you aren't going to be the captain but she continues. "I've been sent from my homeland on a destined quest. I must travel to Aiowa Island to recover a sacred artifact and am in need of a ship."
You ponder her request, recalling you maps and making judgements on the distance, time, supplies, and most importantly the cost. Not to mention the ship would need a captain before it could leave. You tell her it would take at least a week to gather the necessary supplies and quote her a price.
Her face instantly fell and she looked down in shame. "I'm sorry sir," she explains, her voice full of shame, "but my village is poor. They couldn't gather much gold for my quest and I've spent most of it on my magic training and the rest getting here."
You shrug your shoulders, reiterating the price and informing her that if she could come up with the cost, your company would be glad to ferry her to Aiowa. You turn back to The Adventure to decide on a captain when she grabs your arm.
"Wait, please!" She begs, her eyes revealing her desperation. "I can not pay you, but perhaps we can work out some kind of deal? I'm no sailor, but I would be happy to work in exchange for passage!"
You were about to turn her away, you're not interested in trying to train some vixen in a sailor's craft and it would take more than a single trip to pay off the debt. You pause as you look over her again. She is a beautiful young woman... Perhaps you could work out a deal.
Perhaps you would be captaining The Adventure after all!
