Mentioning there's a 3D series of arayoru where Mei (or uh, May) is a girl seems to be a thing people really like to mention these days, so hey yeah sure, here's something with the 3D characters! It's Barry (the blue one) and Gabu.
I've drawn the 3D characters before too, starting from 2012, so yeah hey the series is nothing new to me. This is the first time I even try to draw Mei though, I generally don't really care for the goat designs in that series. Tho Kuro looks pretty good.
The characters from left to right are Barry and Gabu, from Arashi no yoru ni himitsu no tomodachi / One stormy night secret friends.
Hah, honestly not tooo sure what controversy that one had, I'm only veeery vaguely familiar with it, but with Arashi no yoru ni the original book didn't actually state Mei's gender, soooo it's not ooout of the question to change him to her, guess it makes sense for a show directed for small kids. Tho yeah lmao wish they didn't do the change.

The thing with Nu,Pogodi! is that Volk was so earnest and 'immersive' in his efforts to catch (and eat) Zayatz that what might have started as mere camp was interpreted by some as outright romantic interest. Likewise, the artists who designed the rabbit were so intent on portraying Zayatz as supremely innocent and cute and sweet that they kind-of tripped into childlike or girl-like territory, further provoking the pearl-clutchers. Yes Nu, Pogodi! was Soviet Russia's effort to imitate the Pain Factory chase cartoon from America, but there were some comrades who didn't understand the intent. One Stormy Night kind of falls into that trap as well.

The entire One Stormy Night franchise is for children. First are foremost. The moral is that enemies can become friends when given the chance, and that friendship can survive with courage. That's it. That's all there is. But adults need to project both their own agenda and their own libidos into everything, to show how smart they are. And so nonsense like these controversies arise.
