Background/History
In 2026, World War III finally broke out. In 2028, a chain reaction of multiple countries nuking each other caused... well, you can probably guess. Back in 2027, Paul's father was in the U.S. Army and perished in battle. 3 days before the United States received its nuclear attack, 7-year old Paul and his mother hid in a standard-issue nuclear bunker constructed for all homes in America free of charge by the U.S. government. They hid early because other countries were already being nuked, Cuba, India, and the U.K. had already been nuked. Very few hid in their bunkers early as the Richardses did, as they felt that the Red Star powers wouldn't have the guts to nuke America, and it seems that nobody else in California took proper cover like the Richardses, save for two other families. Paul and his mother waited for three whole months before going out. They found that their house, along with the other houses in the neighborhood, had been partially wrecked. The sky was damp with gray clouds and there was total silence save for the quiet whistling of light winds. Two months later. Paul's mom contracted radiation sickness. Paul didn't get it because his immune system was stronger. Paul did his best to care for his mother during this time. Exactly a week after contracting radiation sickness, Paul's mom passed away in her sleep. They didn't even get to say goodbye to each other. Paul was left an orphan. He would have buried her but he didn't have the tools and couldn't lift her body, so he had no choice but to leave her there and trek out on his own. Paul took a calendar with him so as to not lose track of time. He couldn't bring any food or drinks, but thankfully, he wouldn't starve as in preparation, the government had set up automated ration facilities to give any survivors accessible and uncontaminated food and drink. The facilities mainly grew plant-based food so they never exactly ran out as the facilities could always grow more. A year had passed and poor little Paul had to "celebrate" his 8th birthday all alone without any presents, similar to how Christmas went for him in the previous year. He had still had absolutely zero contact with anyone, And while he had lost none of his sanity, he had become critically depressed. But while his mind wanted it all to end, his heart told him to keep going in hopes of finding someone, anyone. He had grown used to sleeping on the sand but longed for a proper bed. He had grown out of his clothes and had to leave them behind and had been naked for some time now. He hadn't had a shower since he left home and absolutely reeked. He was far too sad to even come up with an imaginary friend, so even in that respect, he was completely alone. Nearly another year passed and his 9th birthday was coming up. He had come upon the ruins of the once iconic city of San Francisco. It had been so long since he had laid eyes on a city. Upon coming near mission creek, he heard two voices. Upon discovering the source, he met two boys, a fox and a cat, that were only a few months older than him. What struck him as odd, however, were their appearances. The fox was green in the places that should be orange, while the cat had a black sclera for the right eye and a red sclera for the left eye and also had strange patterns on his back and shoulders. The green fox introduced himself as Keith while the odd-looking cat introduced himself as Kairi and was sometimes called Kai. The two explained that they were mutants due to the radiation. Regardless, Paul burst into tears and quickly pulled Keith and Kairi in for a hug as if they were old friends. The two were weirded out by this only for a moment, but then quickly realized that this kid may have been on his own for some time and longed for the comfort of companionship with another fur, and they hugged back. They invited him to their house and they let him sleep in what was once used as their guest bedroom. (see description for rest of background/history)
