2020 art, in which I decided to develop a character of the Ysel species instead of treating them solely as my universe's equivalent of goblins/kobolds.
----- The Ysel (to pronounce this word, say "weasel" without using any vowels) are a race of vaguely weasel-like gremlin/goblin alien creatures, a common sight in spaceports, space stations, and anywhere that multiple space-faring races intermingle freely. Their exact origin is unknown, but it's speculated that they were displaced from their homeworld in the distant past, and have spread throughout the galaxy ever since, making use of whatever spacecraft they can get their grubby little hands on (typically derelict freighters and transports they manage to jerry-rig back into a usable state) and taking up residence in abandoned space stations, colonies, or just about anywhere their presence will be tolerated.
Generally regarded as shady, untrustworthy, shifty and sleazy scavengers, Ysel typically find work as scrappers, scavengers, mercenaries, or general laborers. Despite their reputation, they are actually clever, resourceful survivalists, and very mechanically inclined, and excellent at getting into--and out of--all sorts of trouble.
Ysla is pretty typical of the species--working as a mechanic, bearing the scars of a rough life on the bottom of whatever social order she's been inserted into, yet doing her best in an environment where her services are quite valuable yet as an individual she isn't considered of much worth at all--not to mention, it always seems like there's somebody watching over her shoulder to make sure she doesn't just steal parts out of whatever machine she's been called in to tinker with this time.
