Sampling Elvis Costello now? Excellent. I remember when the video came out, with the young Chuck & Di lookalikes. Such a very British music vidceo, that.

They actually ran some music videos on the old SCTV program back in the 80s. I first saw both 'One In A Lifetime' and "Everyday I Write The Book' on that show: videos I was trying to understand, on a comedy sketch show I was trying to understand.

SCTV and FNV were both broadcast on NBC in the Friday late night slot. SCTV was its own thing, based on the Second City Comedy enterprise out of Canada. Friday Night Videos filled that slot when SCTV ran its course. And Night Flight, baby. What a show. If M-TV was too Top 40 for you, and you wanted weird shit they didn't show on broadcast TV, book your ticket on Night Flight. If I remember correctly, I first saw "She Blinded Me with Science" and "Fantastic Planet" on Night Flight. FNV, Night Flight, and UFO HBO rank for me as the greatest intros of the 80s TV/cable.

Those were the days. As for Night Flight, don't forget "J-Men Forever!" and "Forbidden Zone".... ;) Near the end of its run on USA, they also had the video for The Sugarcubes' "Birthday", in the original Icelandic, their first international exposure. ;) "J-Men Forever!" was one of the first things I recorded on this then-new thing called a "VCR", just after I left high school. :)
d.m.f. (I now have it on DVD.)

Night Flight also attempted a brief, parodied import of the Super Sentai series Science Squad Dynaman. I did not know what it was even supposed to mean, but it was fun. And VCRs. Ah, yes. I still have numerous tapes filled with stuff I copied off my parents' cable box, with that good old Quasar 2-head top loader. Music videos. Robotech binges. Both "Animalympics" and "Rock &-Rule" off Showtime. That is one of the main reasons I so appreciate these modern times over the past: all that media I can now wallow in, with tremendous quality, and my parents can't say shit!

Dynaman was what led directly to the Power Rangers, for better or worse, which ironically is why it's hard to find. (And I have both Animalympics and Rock & Rule on disc, as well. (Both I saw on what was then an independent station from the Bay Area , now currently a Fox station. They also had Fantastic Planet, and were the first to broadcast Hardware Wars. Like I said, those were the days.... ;) )

Interesting: our local independent broadcast station, equipped with some rather nice content honestly, was also bought out by Fox during the nascent years of The Forth Network. And Hardware Wars. Hee. It should be required viewing every May 4th. Do I remember correctly, that Hardware Wars was produced in San Francisco ..?
