I had an idea for an illustrated novel called ‘The Invincible Captain Rudderbutt’.
It follows an otter superhero named Sherbet (better known by her public persona, Captain Rudderbutt), and her sidekick and boyfriend, Scallop. They go on adventures across the galaxy, helping animals in need and thwarting the plans of the evil crime boss, Lord Cyprinus. (Cyprinus being the scientific name for the common carp).
Early in the story, Lord Cyprinus traps Scallop’s consciousness in a computer. The dreams he has inside the computer feel so real that they’re indistinguishable from reality.
Scallop will die if he stays trapped inside the computer. But the only way to free him is to force him to experience his worst nightmare, in order to startle him awake.
With no other choice, Captain Rudderbutt does just that, she hacks the computer and gives Scallop a nightmare where he has to watch her die in front of him.
Scallop’s life is saved, but for the rest of the story, he suffers from PTSD, having frequent intrusive thoughts about Captain Rudderbutt dying, and being constantly on guard to the point where he can’t enjoy life anymore.
Captain Rudderbutt has to help Scallop learn to live a fulfilling life despite his fear of losing her, and teach him how to be present in the moment and enjoy the time they have together.
