Short bio: Checkmate is a young pony Grandmaster who has won many official Equestria Chess tournaments over the years, including holding a 5 year winning streak (I think I already said that...). When she was young, she attended Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns, however dropped out to pursue her dream to become a Grandmaster. She became Equestria's youngest Grandmaster at the age of 7. She was also Everfree's best friend when they were young.
She thrived on the attention that ponies gave her, in fact, that was her driving motivation to become a Grandmaster in the first place. Once Everfree got her cutie mark and her wings along with it, everyone started paying more attention to her, and Checkmate hated that. She felt a burning hatred and intense jealousy for Everfree, shortly after seemingly moving away to live with her older brother in Las Pegasus, abandoning Everfree.
After she grew up, she became a household name specifically in the chess community for the wrong reasons. Not only does she brag in everypony's faces after she's won, she becomes extremely annoying to her peers. As she grew, her bitterness towards Everfree "stealing her spotlight" remained.
