I love how Nigel poured every ounce of his young being into aspiring to fill the position he was literally groomed for, and was rejected for somehow NOT having some natural spark of empathy and wish to help people of his own accord - you know, because all children are selfless altruists, and such things certainly aren't learned behaviors, right?
Meanwhile, the little green child admitted she made the poison that nearly killed her chief because she wanted to prove she wasn't useless and screwed up, but her motivations are just fine. The Tree's adopted daughter can't act civil with another Guardian and is always starting shit, but she's good to go because she's naturally kind and certainly not because of nepotism. And let's not forget Leo, who hates his father, threatened as a child to break another child's arm over a minor provocation, and abused a blinded prisoner - but, you know, has that spark of empathy that the Tree wants in her Guardians.
This comic started off great, but descends further in hypocrisy with every new page. It's..... disappointing, considering the depth and well-rounded characters and stories the artist has created in the past.

...Nigel was rejected because he wanted to please his parents by becoming a guardian, not because he truly wanted to be a defender of the realm. This is literally explained by the Tree. How do you not get that from the page?
Protip, if you're going to critique and call the work disappointing, try actually going over the stuff you're critiquing first.

Protip, if you're gonna mock people for their opinion, maybe you should stop pretending that the parts that don't support your simping don't exist.
Leo has never expressed any interest in "defending the realm," he wants do what his father supposedly could not; avenge his mother. At most, you have to infer that he's expressed the ideal, offscreen, because he's never shown either any indication of it. So already your argument is flawed.
Additionally - how is Nigel any different than Mira, exactly? Both were raised to become guardians. The only difference being that The Tree Of Nepotism passed her adopted kid on the first try, and told Nigel to try again. Y'know, without ever telling him BEFOREHAND what his supposed flaw is - despite, you know, Leo of all people passing with flying colors. The only difference I can see is that the Tree had years to tell her daughter "You gotta want to protect the innocent to become a guardian, which would make mommy happy." While Nigel got years of "Being guardians is a family tradition, becoming one would make mom and dad happy." Sure, you can say Nigel's parents fucked up, by not passing on the "altruism" memo, but again - look at Leo. He's far more worried about being the strongest and most respectful than helping anyone.
And something I've pointed out in the past: no child is just born with an innate wish to protect the innocent. Altruism and empathy are proven to be learned traits. If a child is not taught them, they will not have them. Families that live in communities or social bubbles that repress such traits don't have children who just manifest it spontaneously, they pass on that lacking to their own kids, and so on and so forth. The Tree had all the time in the world to tell Nigel and his parents "he's going to fail unless someone teaches him this requirement." Hell, what, exactly, kept her from making it public knowledge?

To Roxxas the scumbag: Hey scumbag, how about you get punched in the face for going out of your way to say awful things.
To Xennar: The punchline is that you're too stupid and impatient for not seeing the deeper meaning behind this.
To daliktsuko: You're a hypocrite if you think the comic is "descending further into hypocrisy". Protip, if you're not subscribed to someone not giving constructive criticism, don't go out of your way making comments misunderstanding the characters's motivation in a piece of media.
To WozWerth: You would know all about brick walls, considering you are one.
Goddamn, you people are idiots.
