Decided to do something a bit different whilst working on my current projects. I have been thinking a lot about my passion for the Sonic the Hedgehog series and wanted to start fresh with a new character and stories, this lead to the creation of Rook the Roebuck.
Based within the IDW comics continuity, Rook is is based on a Roe Deer (Roebuck for male) who lives within the Floral Forest region. A wandering healer and researcher who wants to see life florish outside his home and protect all from those who bring threat to it.
Honestly this took a lot longer than I originally intended. I originally sketched Rook without clothes and drew clothes digitally ontop of him. His patterns were very difficult as I have not done this amount of detail in a long time. I am really proud of his colour palette.
Anyways hope you enjoy this new character of mine and I am looking forward to explore and create new stories with a fresh pair of eyes and face.

Weaknesses:
Lack of Street Smarts: The world outside his forest operates much differently than Rook could have ever imagined. Rook is not sure how to act in cities or other build up areas, often bring the ire of it’s residence.
Naivety: Rook is sympathetic to a fault, often letting those who would take advantage of Rook succeed. Rook believes in the good in everyone and finds it hard that those who perform evil deeds for evils sake have succumbed to such actions, resulting in Rook doubting himself and where he places his sympathy.
Arachnophobia: When a young Rook ran into an arachnid nest and caught in its webs for hours, Rook has had a fear of any and all arachnids since and is spooked when coming across webs.
Background/History:
Rook was born within the Lightfoot Tribe of Floral Forest. The Lightfoot Tribe seclude themselves with the rest of Mobius only interacting with other forest tribes such as the Farron Wolpack and the Deepwood Owls. Whilst it’s not uncommon for a member of one of these tribes to eventually leave the forest, the recent attacks by the Eggman Empire has caused many a forest dweller seek knowledge from the outside world to protect their home. Rook had no intentions on leaving his home, being raised among his doe/roe kind and learning to live from the land with a give and take nature was all he knew.
Rooks childhood was normal for a common member of the Lightfoot Tribe. Learning to value all life, respecting ones environment and being light on ones hoof so they can deal with any danger. Like many young doe’s/roe’s Rook took part in the “Fallen Branch Trial”, where a young deer must wander into the woods and find a fallen branch to craft into a walking stick which will aid them for their entire life. The branch has to be strong to shatter the hardest rock to reflect a deer’s resolve against adversity. Light enough for its wielder to hold and not encumber them such as a deer’s ability to always be light on their feet to face danger. It must have fallen naturally so it is not taken from that which still lives so even in death the branch will aid the deer’s life and eventually used as a tombstone once the deer passed, in hops that another strong tree and deer will rise from it.
Rook spent several days searching for the right branch that would aid him, testing several fallen branches by their weight, balance and strength none of which the young buck fitted his needs. Rook came across a fallen branch that was found beside a mahogany tree, the dark branch was known to be resilient when it came to crafting leaving only a hand full of fellow deer’s using them as their aid but to Rook it felt like this branch had fallen for him.
Taking the branch back to his tribe he spent several days shaving it down into a staff, through splinters, cuts and red raw hands Rook held his staff in his hands and it felt it was now apart of him. The mahogany staff would now be the universal tool Rook would take with him through his life and eventually rest alongside him.
Growing up a Lightfoot Tribe member must eventually learn a skill in which they can provide for the livelihood of their tribe. The young Rook was always curious about the smells that came from the alchemist tents, watching the head alchemist taste various fauna in order to understand its properties, experiment with potion crafting to find new functions to aid day to day life and craft healing potions to aid the sick. The head alchemist entertained the young Rooks curiosity and often sent him out to gather ingredients for him. It was a no brainer that Rook took up an alchemist role and studied under the head alchemist as his apprentice.
As the effect of the Eggman Empires war grew, many forest dweller had sought outside the forest to meet the threat with many returning injured. A healing potion could only do so much so first aid and surgical care became a must. Whilst the Lightfoot tribe did have doctors it was thanks to the recruitment of the Deepwood Owls to teach forest dwellers to become doctors as their was a higher demand than ever. Rook took up the opportunity to learn how to repair one’s body which uncovered a fascination of the different Mobians anatomy, taking notes regularly and finding the best ways to aid others.
Eventually the Eggman Empires war grew more intense that many of the tribes within Floral Forest could not ignore it anymore. A gathering of the forest tribe’s leaders was quickly arranged so they could discuss what to do. It was decided that a volunteer task force would leave the forest and aid with the recently formed Restoration to combat the growing threat. Once the leaders returned to their respective tribe’s they called upon their people to volunteer for the effort. Rook was one of the first to volunteer as his curiosity of the outside world was something that lead him to aid in the war effort.
Leaving the only home he had ever know, Rook’s homesickness was held at bay by his sense of adventure and wonder of the outside world and to help others in any way he can.
Personality:
Rook is noble at heart and world consensus. Growing up in a tribe which values the world around them in both life and death Rook believes in nature not being interrupted and protect it from any danger. He is curious of new surroundings and other mobians as living within a contained environment he has never seen many other species or environments that were not native to his home.
Rook believes in everyone is good at heart and its within a mobians nature to be lead astray but needs kindness and compassion to be put on the right track. He will always try and talk down any threat and resolve it with words other than violence.
Because Rook lived in a contained environment surrounded by many who have not experienced other societies outside his home, he can be easily fooled and taken advantage of because of this. When this happens Rook can be very hard on himself but reminds himself that like his tribe’s nature to learn from the environment, he will learn from the experience and grow from it.
