Either that, or the Dragon was so transfixed on reading the map like those modern people who cross the roads and getting hit by cars while fixated on their phones that he simply lost track of just how long he had been travelling.
Either that, or the comic runs on comic time - the dragon could have traveled 3-quarters of the globe, but if all it takes is 2 comic panels, then all characters inside think that's all it took to get there.
