Why does he have only one tail? Did something happen? I see in the bottom left corner that he has a mechanical tail. Was it due to an injury?

This mechanical tail like that third tail that Sails from Sonic Prime has. It's just helps him. But he can't fly anymore.

(spoilers)
But yes, he lost his tail due to an incident with some bad persons and his own plane
