One of many possible scenarios that could've happen during Simba's stint as a horse-lion (LION. HORSE. What is so hard about that?!) This particular scenario show-casing Nala's friendship with Simba. It also provides context for this piece: https://inkbunny.net/s/2454612
Why did Rafiki's broken staff give Nala horse parts? I have two theories, neither of which are perfect. Perhaps there was just enough energy left for it to do so. Perhaps Rafiki has been working on it and it gained some energy back.
While not a big fan of hoof type animal transformations, I'm way more a big cute paw animal kinda person, bunnies, snow leopards, skunks, that kinda thing! *laughs* ^^ I absolutely LOVE when Nala gets involved! By far my absolute favorite, she always adds a lot of cuteness to things! Love that big smile of hers!
On a side note, I figure the staff has tons of magical power inside, near limitless possibly and even a bit of its own personality. A way it could work, is if you are bad or naughty, it's a punishment staff that tries to teach you a lesson to change ones outlook or behavior, or if you are are sweet and nice, it's a wish granting staff that tries to bring happiness to the wisher and fulfill their desires. *note Nala making a wish!* It also has some of his mischievous side so it also likes to just play pranks and/or just have some wild fun now and again.

It's interesting that you say that about the staff because that's pretty much what I was going for. I wouldn't call it sentient or alive. I'm not sure what you'd call it, really but I've settled on it having a "sense of poetry". "Sense of justice" makes it sound like it doesn't have a sense of humor to go with it
Thank you very much! It's interesting that you say that about the staff because that's pretty much
That works! Though I for some reason recall rafiki tapping it or saying something to it in the cartoons. I figured he was "waking it up" I didn't figure it's so much a sense of justice, it's simply a teaching tool that is teaching a lesson, just like Fafiki does, and seems it does so often by altering the form of the one needing to learn the lesson. Course in Nala's case, I love the idea that it enjoys granting and fulfilling wishes when the wish is thoughtful and genuine.
Course, it could just be having some silly fun with Nala, since we both know she definitely is incredibly sneaky and mischievous and probably gets into the same amount of naughty trouble as Simba. Being so closely bonded by friendship, and the "we are one" concept too, maybe it's not surprising magic that effects one rubs off so easily to the other. *laughs*
