Welcome home, sweetie. Your bed's been made, dinner is in the oven and Jen promised she'd be over at seven. Now go put your stuff down and relax, but make sure to stop by the forge and give your Mamma Ciara a kiss on the cheek. You know how she misses you when you're at school.
Not all step-mothers are wicked. In fact, Emer adores her step-mother Niamh immensely. It was Niamh who read her bedtime stories when she was a kit. It was Niamh who patched up Emer's broken arm when, at six, she decided a bedsheet was all it took to fly, and her broken heart when, at thirteen, she broke up with her first girlfriend. Today, Emer is living out on her own while going to school, but Niamh is always there to greet her at the door whenever she comes home for the holidays.
I've been wanting a picture of Niamh and Emer together for ages now, and my recent dabbling with the idea of an alternate reality Emer going to college and living a more modern life, in conjunction with the time of year, gave rise to this little scene. I don't know if I'll go any further with this particular timeline, but it has been fun!
