Tola crouched low to read the tracks of the long-tooth. The moonlight reflected brightly off the obsidian point of his spear. He studied the tracks. They were fresh, he knew he was close. Soon his quest over the past moon would come to an end.
He breathed in deeply, the scent of warm earth reached his nostrils. Other scents filled his nostrils. His brain began to flood with information. He could detect every rodent burrowing in the ground beneath his feet. The musk of a herd of mammoths filled his skull. And somewhere, deep inside, Tola felt the burning need, to hunt.
Tola fell to his knees, his head throbbing. Tears swelled in his eyes. His skin burned and tingled, like a thousand ants were attacking his flesh. His mouth ached, he felt like his mouth was too small. He opened his eyes, and the night appeared as clear as day. He then looked down and saw two long teeth, like a long-tooth.
A pressure began to build up at the base of his spine. at the same time his nose pulled forward. He growled in pain. He felt his hands become lethally armed paws. He wondered why the spirits where torturing him so.
Suddenly, his mind flashed back to his camp. He was a young male, seated at the feet of the mystic. He was listening to a story told by the mystic.
"The spirits work in mysterious ways. There have been, since the world was sung into existence, Creatures who are part man and part beast. They change form like the fire changes shapes when the moon shows her face to the world. Sometimes these creatures choose a man or woman in a tribe to become one of them. The creature would then mark that individual. Within another moon, they would become one of the changers."
Suddenly, it all made sence. How the long-tooth attacked him, leaving a claw in his flesh. How he healed so quickly. These thoughts were pushed off to the back. as the last bone popped into place. The only thing that he could focus on, was finding his prey.
He had become. The Hunter.
