He kept his free will, and it is neat to have a peak inside.

reminds me of my old "Teddy Ruxpin" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teddy_Ruxpin
i found he could play more than the standard "storybook tapes" it was really fun pitting in some AC/DC tapes

Uh, I read that the storybook tapes are special. They have signals that move Teddy's jaws so he appears to be narrating the story, tho the sound is actually coming out of the doll's speakers. This is similar to what the robot in the Illinois pavilion at Disneyworld had; as the tape soundtrack unreeled, signals from it would make the robot gesture, etc., and look alive. The first ones activated it rising from its chair to address the audience and deliver excerpts from Lincoln's speeches. The recorded voice was that of a Bill Dana whom, after many interviews and trials, was chosen by the technician crew, etc., as having the voice most likely to be that of Lincoln.
Back then, only the most primitive phonograph existed, etching sound vibrations in lampblack on a revolving cone. Only recently did we develop the technology to reverse the process and play back the voice. The results were no-fi. One was the phrase "Au Claire de la lune" and another was the numbers from 1 to 9. Only written notes made it possible to figure out the noises recorded on the cone. "uh - uh - uh uh !"

The first mobian robotized was about to DIE when the machine was run, but, due to tampering by Robotnik to discredit Chuck ,its actual inventor. Jules, Sonic's father, came out mindless and would only follow orders like "Go left, pick up work bench, carry it to far corner...". When the Bem rerobotized the multitude of victims of the machine, they realized Jules would die the moment he was put through the reverse change. He remains the only robian .

Free will was restored in many ways, some accidental. Power rings revive it, temporarily.

Figuring Tails managed to interrupt the process before Kit's free will was effected.

Imagine Dick Dastardly trying to robotize Kit.
