I heard the Mina thing was do to a typo or miss communication. It was originally supposed to be Fiona, but she always seemed to toxic from the moment she came back. In a warped way Mina made sense. She wanted Sonic but couldn't get him, so she went with his sidekick. Tails always having admired Sonic could fall for another speedster. Not saying it's perfect but it makes a kind of sense. Plus all that was before Nicole was even experimenting with a physical form.
