I've become a fan of combining the realistic backgrounds with cartoons, because it allows me to combine both photography and illustration (both of which I enjoy greatly), and sets the characters in the world of the audience, making it seem we can interact with them with only a little imagination. I was impressed as a kid by shows in which a live performer would seem to dance with Jerry (the mouse from Tom and Jerry).
