Yo, if you wanna get a beginner reptile (which you should always buy from a good pet shop, possibly one where you can handle your scale baby first and ask knowledgeable staff. Petco and Petsmart, they get their reptiles from mills and it's terrible stuff.) I wouuuuld..
100% recommend getting a young leopard gecko n raising it. They're lazy as hecc and very low maintenance , but also so so sweet and deffo a kind of pet that you get back what you put in from IMO. :Y Downside is that they're insectivores so get ready to farm creep crawlies or get them from your pet shop often. Also gotta coat them in herp cocaine before you feed your bebe . ( Repashy's Calcium Plus is gud. )
Crested geckos are even less work, but are scared of you n hate you 90% of the time but that silly face makes up for it so much. Also gonna get pooped n peed on. Breeding them is super fun cuz they're basically randomized and two identical parents could poop out totally different babies. They also eat premade smoothies (Pangea's food is the best) or insects. Sometimes they get picky tho n you gotta change the flavor.
Ball pythons got to be one of the best snakes to have, but get ready to keep frozen mice and they sometimes just refuse to eat and it can get baaad.. Otherwise you have a lovely little puppy faced sentient noodle and the morph variety is siiiick. (Stay away from ''spiders'' tho. Very unethical gene that produces an animal that can barely eat or function..)
Hognose snakes are freaking cute too but as young noodles they're spicy. They will HISS at ya and it's precious. They can also try to bury into you and it's just the sweetest. Might get spooped n play dead w its tongue out. So much personality. :Y BUT they're mildly venomous and their saliva can get allergic reactions out of a few ppl. Also frozen dead mice, again.
Others I am not that knowledgeable about or wouldn't recommend cuz of their own reasons.. Ppl are generally turned off by reptiles cuz ''TheY cAnNoT LoVe YoU'' which is true, but I'll take a little cold derp exploiting me for my body heat and call it a hug any day, those ppl are joyless cunts.
BONUS FACT Day geckos break my heart, cuz they're gorgeous, cute and curious, BUT will literally THROW THEIR ACTUAL SKIN as the most horrific defense mechanism and it leaves them looking like raw chicken and leave you with eternal trauma.. :T
I shut up now, sorry. I really love reptiles. :Y

Are ratsnakes okay beginner pets? They are native where I live so I know I can find a domestic line if I look around, would rather prefer to not go herping.

From what I've heard they're also considered to be a beginner pet, but if I recall correctly they can be quite skittish and quick. I am not sure if I'm confusing them with something I heard from corn snakes or another smaller species, but someone made a point of how much faster these guys are and given their smoller size they can just decide to yeet from your hands and then you no longer have a snake. ;v; Then again, you might luck out with the sweetest calmest snake. If you're getting one from a shop where it's been handled it should be fine, but I'd definitely ask the people there for more advice about the individual snek.
