Did some fumbling with the lighting effects on this one.
Ah yes, the hidden blade, the iconic weapon of the franchise. You’d think we’d finally learn who made this legendary weapon in the Origins game. You’d be wrong. We never do learn who made it, only to have Aya tell us it “is a weapon used by the ancients” despite the fact that WE are in ancient times in this game. Given the lore (more into that later), it is an acceptable explanation.
Since this is the first game in the “new system” series of Assassin’s Creed, the hidden blade is sadly no longer always an instant silent kill. If you attempt to use it on enemies who are at a higher level or tough class, they will survive the assassination attempt and attack you. Thankfully, if you save these enemies for last during infiltration runs, it’s not too problematic.
I should also note how freaking large the blade is in it’s starting form in this installment, compared to the narrow blades used in earlier games. I guess this makes it more deadly, but you’d think the narrow blades would be better for the weapon’s intended purpose. As you upgrade it in this game, it does get narrower.
And since it’s tied in with the blade, let’s discuss the lore. I was going to do that in another pic for that, but we’ll get it out of the way now. Mind the SPOILERS.
So, when I first started the series with AC 1 and 2, the main mystery was the “Apple of Eden”, an artifact which held great power. This gave me the impression that the ones behind such artifacts were the Biblical figures, who were actually far more technologically advanced than they seem or possessed special powers. I never actually finished AC 2, but I did see glimpses of a video that seemed to be of Adam and Eve. It was a very intriguing mystery.
Eventually, in a top 10 video, the mystery was revealed. It wasn’t biblical figures behind the Apple of Eden, rather a race of powerful alien-like beings who resembled humans, called Precursors or “Those who came before”. Eventually, their real name was revealed to be Isu. These beings used Humanity as servants, until Humanity rebelled against them and they vanished, the only evidence of their existence is the artifacts they left behind.
I didn’t know how to feel about this revelation. On one hand, it was pretty creative. On the other, it felt somewhat out of place, like at first, AC felt more like a “Mystical” or Supernatural” story and this took it in a Scifi direction, which I don’t mind, but the Biblical figure theory seemed more interesting.
After AC 3, the Story line entered a phase of stagnation. The games that came out after AC 3 were great, but their stories were all self-contained and the protagonists were silent faceless nobodies that just worked in the background for the Assassin’s or a Game Dev at Abstergo Entertainment. The story was thankfully vastly improved in Origins with a new Solid Protagonist Layla, who would appear in the next two games as well.
The one minor issue I had is with the settings. Up until this game, all the artifacts the Assassins and Templars were after were based around Christian mythology and such. Christianity felt like a central theme of the games. Hell, just look at the Templars. Then Origins appears and just says “Nope, turns out Christianity isn’t vital to the theme at all”. While this does give the games an excuse to visit new locals and times that didn’t feature Christianity, it does feel like they were throwing out a major piece of the lore. I’m not religious, but it did make some good stories with the aforementioned Apple of Eden.
I’ve babbled enough, enjoy Leon learning the hard way how his new Hidden blade works and Mirin in a very skimpy loincloth diaper.
