Chapter 7b

Welcome to the family

Written by James Rex

Gonzalo: Entonces ya lo decidiste/So you have already decided?

Carmen: No podemos dejarlo solo, le podria ocurrir algo o talvez alguien le haga daño/We can't leave him alone, something could happen to him or someone could hurt him.

Gonzalo: Tienes un gran y noble corazon mi vida, por eso me enamore perdidamente de ti/You have a big and noble heart my life, that's why I fell madly in love with you.

Carmen blushed and looked her husband in the eyes.

Gonzalo: Muy bien, si eso te hacer sentir feliz el puede quedarse con nosotros/Very well, if it makes you feel happy he can stay with us.

David and Katherine howled with joy, Tay was confused and looked at the two siblings, Katherine just smiled at him with joy and David was so happy that his tail seemed to have a life of its own.

David: Tengo un nuevo hermano/I have a new brother (he said very happy).

Gonzalo: Listen to me Taylor, I know you had a terrible day and lost what was left of your family, but now you have gained another one.

Gonzalo: The Morales family takes you under their wing, from today you are part of this family.

Tay was so happy that she could not hold back her tears, finally all her suffering was disappearing, but it still hurt his to have to lie to his new family and he was also worried about his real family, all this began to become a hurricane inside his mind but Carmen's almost angelic voice reassured him.

Carmen: Don't cry anymore love, everything is ok now, you don't have to be sad anymore.

Tay smiled wiping her tears.

David: Mom, can I eat now?

Carmen: Not yet honey, you know what you have to do.

David: It's ok mom.

The four of them bowed their heads and began to pray, Tay looked at them and thought he should do the same, it was not necessary to know what they were saying to understand that they were giving thanks before eating so he also started to give thanks while whispering.

Tay: Thank you for helping me.

Tay: Thank you for giving me a place to live and with good people.

Tay: I beg you to forgive me for lying to them but I promise I will tell them the truth when the time is right, I promise with my heart in my hand.

Tay: I also ask you not to forsake my old family, even if they hate me I still don't stop loving them.

Gonzalo: Alright family, you can eat now.

They all started to eat, maybe it was because he were hungry but Tay felt that this was the most delicious food she had ever tasted in her short life, after they finished eating Katherine helped her mother to pick up the dishes, Tay did not stay behind and also helped, then he helped Katherine to wash the dishes, Tay was happy to help her, she is now her sister so he thought it was his obligation, when they finished washing the dishes they went to the living room, Carmen and Gonzalo were sitting on the couch watching TV and talking occasionally about the things they saw or what they did during the day.

David, on the other hand, was engaged in an intense pitched battle with his toy soldiers, Tay and Katherine sitting near him.

Katherine: I know I shouldn't ask you, but before you stayed on your own, did you go to school?

Tay: Yes, I was in fourth grade.

Katherine: Great, I'm in fourth grade too, and I'm the president of my class (she said proudly).

Tay: You must be very responsible to get elected.

Katherine: Yep, I like to keep up with my homework.

Tay smiles at her with a bit of indifference.

Katherine: Just so you know I'm not a show-off, I hate it when people show-off.

Tay: It's okay, don't be angry (he said holding back a giggle).

Tay: What do your parents work on?

Katherine: "Our" parents (she emphasized)

Katherine: Well dad is an auto mechanic engineer and mom is an artist, she likes to paint and create sculptures.

Tay: And you used to live in Spain or?

Katherine: (she laughs) No silly, we don't have that accent, "joder tio" (she said with Spanish accent and laughing more).

Tay also laughs.

Katherine: Mom is from Mexico and dad is from Ecuador.

Katherine: My dad met mom when he traveled to Mexico for a job offer, he always told us that she looked as beautiful as an Angel with her sculptures when he saw her for the first time in that art gallery.

Tay: And why did you come to the United States?

Katherine: Well, dad met the owner of the mechanic shop where he worked and they became friends, that gentleman liked my dad's dedication and effort so he proposed him to be the chief mechanic of the new shop that was about to open, my dad didn't want to give up that opportunity and with mom's support we moved here.

Tay: "We" moved?

Katherine: Yes, me and my brother were born in Mexico so our native language is Spanish.

Katherine: That reminds me, since you will be living with us now you should know that at home we always speak Spanish.

Katherine: Also the neighbors, the whole neighborhood speaks Spanish because they all come from Argentina, Chile, Colombia and also Spain.

Tay: That would be a problem, right?

Katherine: Don't worry, I'll teach you, well if you want (she plays with her hair).

Tay: I would like to learn.

They both looked at each other for a moment smiling.

Tay: So, how many years have you been living here?

Katherine: With this one it will already be five years.

Tay thought about what else to ask her.

Katherine: You know, I could tell that you have a different accent when you speak, and I can't remember what race you are.

Katherine: You're not from here too, are you?

Tay: Well no, I'm a dingo and I'm from Australia.

The Katherine's eyes lit up.

Katherine: You are from Australia, it's a very nice country, when I grow up I would like to see Sydney it's a beautiful city, see the Opera House, The Harbour Bridge, The Rocks (she sighs).

Tay: Do you really like it that much?

Katherine: Yes (she seemed to be wandering in her imagination).

Tay: Then I assure you that one day you will be able to visit Australia.

Katherine looks at Tay and blushes a lot, she smiles and looks into his eyes.

Katherine: What beautiful eyes you have, they are like two emeralds.

Now Tay is the one blushing showing a smile and looking at the floor.

David: mayday ,mayday this is the Black Hawk, we're hit, we're hit, we're losing altitude (he makes a popping sound with his mouth).

Tay and Katherine looked at little David playing and both joined him.

Tay: This is Sergeant Taylor, my squad is going to the crash site, the situation is critical, we need to help the survivors.

Katherine: This is pilot Katherine from Black Hawk two, we have spotted a group of armed rebels near the crash site, we will provide support from the air.

The three children played until 9:30 at night, then Carmen asked them to get ready for bed, after picking up the toys they all went up to the second floor, Tay looked for his backpack but remembered he had left it downstairs.

He came back but met Gonzalo on the stairs, he was carrying his backpack and gave it back to him, before going to her room he ruffled Tay's hair and said goodbye. Tay brushed her teeth with David, when they finished they left the bathroom and Carmen stopped Tay.

Carmen: You will sleep in David's room, I have already arranged a mattress for you to sleep on.

Tay: Thank you (he showed a big smile).

Carmen: Sleep tight sweetheart (she gives him a kiss on his forehead).

David: Come Taylor, follow me.

Carmen: Don't stay up too late.

David: No mom, have a nice dream.

Carmen: Thank you my love (she also gives him a kiss on his forehead).

Both children went into the room, it was the typical room of a small child but it was clean and quite tidy, David began to undress to put on his pajamas and Tay looked in his backpack for a clean shirt, he took off the one he had and put on the clean one then he took off his shoes, socks and pants then he looked for a pair of shorts in his backpack and put them on, David was already wearing pajamas with drawings of airplanes. Then they both went to bed and Carmen came in, after seeing them she turned off the light and closed the door.

David: I'm so happy to have a brother to play with.

Tay: I'm happy to have a little brother too.

David: Really? although I would have liked to be the big brother.

Tay laughs at that.

David: How old are you Taylor?

Tay: I'm nine years old.

David: Wow, so you're our big brother now.

Tay: Really?

David: Yes, my sister is eight but she will be nine next month.

Tay: And how old are you?

David: six and a half, but I still have a long way to go before I turn seven.

David: (yawns) I'm sleepy already, good night Taylor.

Tay: You can call me Tay.

David: Ok.

Tay: Rest up little brother.

They both fell asleep, the next morning the family woke up early, Carmen was preparing breakfast with Katherine's help, Gonzalo was watching the news on his cell phone, David was watching TV and Tay was sitting next to Gonzalo still half asleep.

After breakfast Katherine started to teach Tay some Spanish words, the morning went by very fast, in the afternoon Gonzalo was working in his small vegetable garden, Tay and David were helping him, on the other hand Katherine was helping her mom with a sculpture she was making with some empty cans and bottles.

Fluke OST 12. Being home.

After two hours Gonzalo was playing with his now three children, they were playing with a tennis ball throwing it and competing to see who could keep it the longest, Carmen was watching them sitting on a bench laughing and helping them from time to time.

Tay had never had so much fun, playing with them made him forget the life he left behind, now he only felt that the happiness he had lost was coming back stronger inside his heart, it was the happiest moment of his new life.

Gonzalo gently pushed his two sons, causing them to fall down, then caught Katherine and ran across the yard carrying her on his shoulders while the two children tried to catch up with him. Soon it started to get dark and everyone went inside the house, Carmen sent her three children to take a bath after Katherine came out of the bathroom it was David's turn but he asked and insisted Tay to take a bath with him, in the end she convinced him and they took a bath together playing with the foam, once they were clean and dressed the three went down to the living room, and saw Gonzalo sitting on the couch and tuning his guitar.

Katherine: Daddy sing the song I like, please (she shows a smile from ear to ear).

Gonzalo: Mmmmn, only if you sing with me.

Katherine: (looks at Tay and blushes) Come on daddy you don't have to, your voice is pretty.

Gonzalo: Then no deal.

Katherine: Ok, I'll sing with you (she pouts).

Gonzalo: That's my princess, besides your voice is pretty too.

Katherine sat down next to her father. Gonzalo started to play a melody with his guitar and then started to sing.

Gonzalo:

ME PREGUNTARON COMO VIVIA,

(they asked me how I lived)

ME PREGUNTAROON...

(they asked me)

SOBREVIVIENDO DIJE,

(surviving I said)

SOBREVIVIEEEENDOOOOOO...

(surviving)

TENGO UN POEMA ESCRITO MAS

(I have a poem written more)

DE MIL VECEEES...

(than a thousand times)

Sobreviviendo by Victor Heredia

It was a beautiful song, Tay was amazed to hear it, although he still did not understand Spanish the simple fact of listening to the chords and Gonzalo's voice generated a great joy and nostalgia in his heart, and in a certain part of the melody Katherine began to sing a part of the song, her fine voice was sweet and very harmonious then Gonzalo began to sing along with her in chorus, both voices had an incomparable harmony.

Tay sighed as he listened to them, that song was engraved in his mind and he knew he would never forget it, Carmen watched them happily from the hallway leaning against the wall, they both finished singing in duet, Gonzalo's deep and powerful voice together with Katherine's high and soft voice was incomparable, Tay fantasized about singing like that someday, at that moment Gonzalo looked at him and showing a smile he said.

Gonzalo: Do you like the guitar, son?

Tay nodded his head with joy.

Gonzalo: Would you like to learn how to play it?

Tay: Yes, I would like to try (he said a little shyly).

Gonzalo: Very well, I will teach you and I am sure you will learn.

Gonzalo: I know you are a smart boy and never hesitate to show that you are (He approaches and playfully tousles Tay's hair).

Carmen: Well, everyone come and eat, food is served.

They all got up and went to the dining room, prayed and started eating. After eating the family gathered in the living room and watched a movie, when the movie was over everyone went to sleep.
