Floating out in space isn't for everyone, especially solo. Most folks only trust their safety in the Black to reputable cruise and transport lines. But for the Kriat Taas, Space is pretty much life. You're born in space, you live in space, and you die in space. Sometimes horribly.
Eight, shown here, of course is accustomed to such life, even having resided planetside for more than a decade now, you don't just forget growing up with zero gravity, no breathable atmosphere, and nothing between you and the infinite expanse of pitch black vacuum except a little bit of carbide alloy, some mylar and a triple-thick radiation barrier. She's a dangerous bitch, Space.
Of course, no proper Spacer would set out into such inhospitable environments without the proper equipment. Not only is an elemental suit a must, but you absolutely have to have a ship you can trust, be it a as large as a freighter, or as small as a single occupant decommissioned military scout.
Eight's ship was built hardy, with extended range thrust and life support capacity, thicker armor to handle all that pesky space debris, and the most comfortable pilot's seat you've ever parked your ass in.
He bought it from a scrap dealer of course, in complete disarray and missing many key components. An earlier model, almost a relic, and in such a state that even a museum wouldn't take it.
But the price was right, the parts are easy to find and after months of work, Eight was bound for space, from lower atmosphere to the far reaches of distant planets.
He calls the ship "Ricky". It's the first name he thought of.
---------------------------------------------------------
I spent all day on this yesterday. I hadn't planned to, but an impromptu day off compelled me, as I had not planned on anything else. Seriously though, like 10 hours went into this. Y'know, I just kinda though.... why the hell not?
You guys should see all the layers. There are SO MANY. See, with a character, I work in a handful of layers, lines, colors, shades and highlights, and then some more for details like the face and little bits all over, but this one had that.... PLUS for the ship. And dont' get me STARTED on the background!
With things like background or, in this case, the ship itself, I typically do vector style work, no lines or anything, just blocks of shapes for the base. And this ship... has so many blocks of shapes and shit. The layers on top, the canopy, glass, starboard side thrusters and hull, all separate pieces. The thrusters alone were built one flap at a time, every little spot where there's a light from the engine, every lighting effect in conjunction with the base light, all built one at a time. It's not "drawn" it's actually built, one piece at at a time, then when a piece is done, like a thruster, I merge down about 30 layers into one thruster layer so I can move it and resize it if I need to.
This one was quite the undertaking. I'm pleased with the outcome enough, even if the final product does seem incredibly busy.... but I guess that's kinda how space is, right? Untidy, cluttered, loooooots of shit going on out there.
Anyways, enjoy Eight and Ricky!
I need to get better at tagging these.
