Unicorns, according to the original Medieval Christian fables, could only be tamed by female virgins. They were a powerful symbol of masculine chastity, hence their attraction to female chastity. Those horns aren't just for show - they'll charge headlong at evildoers and monsters and stab 'em to death, and the horns are also magical and can purify toxic bodies of water.
A later version had unicorns be invisible to anyone who isn't a virgin, to explain why most people just don't see them but imaginative children often pretend they do. This couple is based on that premise - immediately upon consummating their marriage, they will become mutually invisible to each other. Good thing they've got those big wedding rings around their horns, that'll give them a good idea of where each other are standing at a given time and a rough idea of where the pokey bit is.
I should've given the mare more wedding clothes, so as to make a pun on bridle and bridal. Oh well.
