The story starts of in the town of Greenwood, a small town located in the Midwest. a man walking along the side walk heading home, his name was Matthew Wilson but he was not the main character of this story; that privilege belonged to his golden retriever named Molly, walking alongside him, enjoying her walk as they made their way back to the apartment complex well Matthew lived as he walked to their complex opening the door as Molly walked between the doorway, making her way to a doggie bowl, drinking the water out to replenish herself after a walk on warm day.
Matthew got on his knees removing Molly's leash and rubbing her chin, as she showed signs of enjoyment smiling.
"I'll put some TV on for you to watch while I get started in dinner" Matthew said, reaching for the remote, turning on the device as Molly leaped on the couch watching the monitor as Matthew headed into the kitchen getting started on dinner. Molly looked at the TV, before turning to the kitchen.
"Any chance I could have some yogurt?" The canine asked. Mollie was not your typical dog as she was pretty smart and able to speak and interact with Matt, though he was the only one who Molly ever revealed this to. Matt's family had Molly since she was a puppy, getting her in his child years, and when he left she went with him he was about 22 and she was about the same age in human years but had the mentality of an adult having grown up together as Matt smirked.
"No Yogurt until after dinner Molly" Matt said boiling some hotdogs in the pot and opening a can of beans, pouring them in a smaller pot, letting them simmer. Matt was first surprised that Molly could talk and be so smart for a dog but he learned not to question it. when he was younger he tried to tell his parents the family dog talked but they never believed and all they got from Molly were barks, she was really good at keeping it secret
"You want ketchup or mustard" Matthew asked, stirring the beans and watching the hotdogs bubble as Molly laid belly down on the sofa, replying she wanted mustard, honey mustard if he had it as he walked to the fridge, opening the door as he looked through the shelf.
"Nope, only regular yellow and stone ground spicy" Matthew replied holding to bottles as Molly wanted to try the spicy, saying she was feeling adventurous as Matthew nodded, putting the yellow mustard back in the fridge. Matt pulled some of the hotdogs from the put, chopping them up and mixing them in a bowl with the beans, stirring the spicy mustard in before setting the bowl of dinner, next to Molly's water bowl as the dog leapt off the couch, digging into her meal.
Mmm. delicious" The canine said, running her tongue along his mouth, licking the reside off as Matthew made his way to the dining room table. he said down keeping his beans separate from his hotdog, still in tact, running a line of mustard across it. picking up his fork he enjoying his meal. after dinner Matt walked to Molly's empty bowl, carrying it so the sink as he washed it out, putting his own plate in the sink as well.
"So about that yogurt?" Molly asked, following Matt, bumping his leg with her nose as he planned his keeping his promise, telling her to head back to the living room and he'd have it out. Molly made her way back to the living room as Matthew, opened the fridge, pulling out a cup of strawberry flavored yogurt, pulling the metal lid. Matthew opened one of the cabinets, pulling out a bottle of medicine for Molly, pouring on of the pills in his hand and crushing it up before stirring it into the yogurt cup.
after washing the dished out he headed to the sofa to watch TV, sitting down as Molly laid across his lap.
Matthew pushed a few buttons on the remote, setting it down before he scratched the retriever behind her ear which she enjoys before holding the cup of pink dessert up, molly running her tongue along the side, slurping up the yogurt.
The show was nothing worth noting, a decent action comedy. the two watched as Molly rolled on her back, playfully kicking her legs as Matt took to hint to rub the dog on her belly which she really enjoyed, since she was a puppy. Matthew gently rubbed his fingertips along her golden fur. the dog suddenly yipping in delight.
"Oh Matt, I love it when you do that" Molly said, complimenting his hand. The two watched the show which was about a comedic duo of detectives trying to solve a crime. the lead character the serious straight man and the partner being comedic foil rookie.
"Do you think I could make it as a police dog?" Molly joked having no real interest in the occupation but Matt acknowledged she was smarter than most dogs and would probably make a good addition as she blushed.
Molly was good at reading people and easily identified the culprit of the episode as it ended. Matt got up, saying he was gonna take a shower before bed as he had work tomorrow, heading off to the bathroom as Molly said she was gonna keep watching until he came back, watching the showing as Matt walked off.
Molly stretched, laying on her back as the next episode started, licking from her cup of yogurt. Molly knew that Matt often snuck her medicine into desserts like yogurt and peanut butter but did not complain as it kept her healthy and could not complain.
"Matt, hurry up; I'd like to use the bathroom before bedtime" Molly called out to the room, the sounds of the shower running filling the room. one of the things about being smart was that potty training Molly was surprisingly easy, though the sight of a golden retriever using a toilet was a bit hilarious. Despite this she not above using the bathroom outside whilst on a walk if she had to go but most of the time she used the in house toilet.
Molly finished her yogurt cub, licking the plastic clean as she stretched again, smacking her lips. The next episode was about a knife murder and they showed the killer in the opening so it lost the mystery factor.
Eventually Matt left the bathroom wearing a bathrobe and boxers as he walked by stretching, letting out a yawn, saying goodnight to Molly before heading down the hallway. Molly reached for the remote, turning the TV Off as she followed him. their apartment had a main room/living room, a kitchen with a small dining room, one bathroom and a bedroom. it was fairly small.
They made their way back to the bedroom as Matthew dropped his bathrobe, wearing only his boxers as Molly turned her head as he got under the covers of his bed, Molly crawling to her doggy-bed at the foot of Matthew's bed, curling up as they both drifted off to sleep.
Molly drifted off, remembering when she met Matthew. he was about 5 when his father brought her home from the pet store. The Wilsons were the first real family she had, having no recollection of her mother. and grew up with Matt. Molly did not know why she was able to talk but was smart in hiding it. Matt did not even know she could speak until one day when he was 10 and he overheard her.
Matt was in the hallway of his family home drinking from a can of Radicola watermelon Meltdown. a soft drink that was known for being surprisingly sour as he heard his Gamestation Classic playing and a high pitched voiced, sounding like it belonged to a little girl.
"Come on, jump, jump... stupid buttons" the voice said as Matt's first thought was who entered his room, as he opened the door, seeing the source of the noise, his puppy who was fumbling with the controller, trying to hit the buttons with her paws as she looked over at him.
"Uhh... woof" The Canine replied realizing that Matt overheard her was shocked the dog talked and was playing his video game
Matt did the reasonable thing and tried to convince his family the dog could talk but they dismissed it as just him being a kid and goofing off as he closed the door, plopping on the bed.
"Why, you made me seem like a lair in front of my family" Matthew asked, as when prompted to speak to the parents the golden retriever simply whimpers in confused. Molly jumped up on the bed.
"I did not want them knowing, dogs don't talk, or we're not supposed and if they knew who knew what would happen. I don't want guys in suits showing up, wanting to take me apart, but I get the cats outta the bag, or Dog in the case. I suppose I can't hide it from you" Molly stated.
"Wait, I've known you for like 5 years and never heard a word and now i find out you're smart, able to talk and play games. you're basically a cartoon dog. If you're so smart why have I been picking up your poop?" Matt asked confused a bit mad with her. Molly realized that wasn't fair to him.
"Okay, I'll be more honest with you, just don't be mad at me for keeping this secret" Molly begged. caring about her owner and not wanting Matthew to be mad at her. Matthew could understand where she was coming from as he know she wasn't going to expose her abilities but was willing to forgive her.
"Only if you start going to the bathroom outside, or learn to use the toilet" Matthew replied, stating his term as Molly agreed. he didn't seem to hold anything against her for long
From that day the two were more open with each other and Molly found it liberating to talk with Matthew, as she had a lot she wanted to say, about the food they were feeding her, claiming that dry dogfood tasted awful and loving TV shows.
Matt even tried teacher her to play video games, which she kind of sucked at due to her paws but she enjoyed watching him play. The two would often go to the park and play catch which Molly liked; it was probably just instinct but when he tossed that tennis ball, she always wagged her tail in delight running after it.
When he'd leave for school, she patiently waited for him to return, and when he left home to move out on his move she went with him, despite being the family dog. it was clear Matt was her owner or the one she bonded to the most.
Upon moving Matthew got a job at Donny Parconi's an independent pizza restaurant and worked as a delivery boy. it was a decent and honest job as he was able to afford an apartment where the two lived together and they seemed happy with their life. in the middle of the night Molly climbed up on Matthew's bed, laying on the covers beside him.
