Introducing Blue Thrush the Pegasus Pony

A certain little blue foal once more leapt off from the highest cloud he could reach. He thought nothing of the hard ground 100s of feed below, nor did he care that he’d grown past the natural erratic flight innate to all very young pegasi and plummeted like a very soft rock. Blue Thrush simply loved the rush of air flowing around him, giggling all the while, plummeting like any flightless equine would.

Fortunately for the colt, his parents were used to his shenanigans, and Blue once again found himself wrapped in the gentle embrace of fores, his papa carrying him back up to their place in the clouds. He was given the usual admonishments from his folks, but just laughed his way through. It wasn’t like he was old enough to even consider the word “sorry”, or the concept of frightening them when he casually leapt out of the cloudy home in the sky. This reoccurring incident was one of the primary reasons Blue’s parents – Green Jay and Red Robin – were planning to move. Not only was there a nice budding community they wanted to become a part of down in the lands of Equestria proper, but it would give them peace of mind to not have to worry about their only child making impromptu skydiving attempts.

And so, before the chubby colt first set hoof in a schoolhouse or learned to talk, the family of three settled down in the happy place of Ponyville. Green Jay didn’t mind the trek back to the Cloudsdale Observatory for work, and Red Robin’s spring and fall migration duties was one that could be practiced anywhere. Blue Thrush himself was more than happy to go on those long, overnight flights with his mother in either case, settled in a saddlebag and free to peer about, or sleep, whatever his fancy was. The colt was also permitted overnight jaunts with his father at the observatory, or up on a high cloud, a pegasus camping trip of sorts where Green would teach his son the many constellations and tales of outer space. The colt’s orange eyes would sparkle in wonder before they’d droop close and settle to sleep under his papa’s wing.

It was hard for said habits to die, but eventually Blue Thrush wouldn’t have 100% of his free time dedicated to parents. With four hooves mostly bound to the earth (save the shelf- or roof-climbing ventures to still go for those leaps of faith – he never did grow out of his proclivities for height and flight), Blue was free to explore the town and make friends! His colthood was a simple happy one, filled with adventures, friendship, and happy times. Blue Thrush wasn’t a pony who stood out among the herd, blending in with all the other colorful ponies his age. Not particularly tall, but plenty wide, Blue absolutely adored the many tasty treasures that Ponyville had to offer. With Sugarcube Corner a few blocks away, Blue had quickly grown fond of sampling the many delicacies the land of Equestria had to offer. Though he may have inherited the stocky nature on his mother’s side, he further enhanced that build with the many trips to the colorful candy-decorated shop, and being spoiled to a degree by his loving parents.

The bright-eyed colt didn’t spend all his days scarfing down delicious grub, however. He still maintained his desires of flight, and worked his tail off to put his fluffy wings to good use. His desire made him one of the younger pegasi to achieve conscious flight, and the day he achieved this was a miraculous one for him indeed! Feeling the wind whip through his purple mane and tail, buffeting his blue fur, squinting against the rush of air and coming to a purposeful crash against a large thick cloud, giggling all the while. He rolled himself right off and soared back to earth, rushing into a big group hug with Green Jay and Red Robin alike. It was at that moment that Blue gained another accolade: Being one of the younger ponies of his generation to discover his cutie mark. There wasn’t much mystery here, as Blue had always been set in his ways of flying and a good, affectionate snuggle. Thus, the pegasus colt’s flanks shone bright, and when the light faded, a light poofy cloud adorned either side, signifying Blue Thrush’s love of the sky, and his wont for big, cuddly hugs with those he loved.

His Cute-ceañera featured one of the first times he ate more than he could hold, the celebration lasting for hours and subsequent aftermath being probably not so fun for the overstuffed colt. But, to this day it remains one of his most treasured memories. Everyone he knew and more paid a visit, as Ponyville was a tight-knit community and always sought to celebrate what was a very pony achievement. Fellow classmates, including a trio of fillies whose crusade would improve the hearts of minds and many over the coming years, joined in the festivities and offered their congratulations. Overall, it was a magical time, and Blue’s heart brimmed with joy, and furthered his own desires to live a life like that. Surrounded by friends (and food!) and seeing everyone with naught but smiles on their faces.

Blue Thrush’s adolescence continued his trend, and even those times where ponies may act out didn’t seem to settle into his life. The dopey happy pegasus grew and grew, maintaining his chubby frame and figure. Before he knew it he was nearing adulthood, the colt-turned-stallion still clinging to habits of old, with only slight adjustments: He flew alongside his mother in those migration trips she took, loving any excuse to fly in general, and now able to keep Red Robin company when she would peel off from the rest of the migration team. And nights up on the clouds were filled with intense back-and-forth discussions with his father, him and Green spending hours talking about their theories of the stars and beyond.

Despite all these great and happy times, though, there was one serious conversation that Blue had to hear from his parents, before he truly set off on his own. It was time to tell Blue Thrush all about the dangers of griffons. Blue had always been told to never approach a strange one all alone, for it wasn’t just tall tales told to little foals to keep them well-behaved: Griffons ate ponies! Old biology that never quite died out nor stomped out of griffon society, griffons predated on scrumptious little ponies given the opportunity and desire. Blue was shocked to hear this truth, and insisted that there had been griffons that visited or lived in Equestria. There were even griffons in Ponyville! While his parents relented there were a few good apples in the bunch, and those with residence here were generally trustworthy, not everypony was so fortunate to be in that sort of company with the flying felines. Blue was conflicted, but overall understood. After all, Equestria was home to many a monster that would be more than happy to dine on the dominant species living there. Griffons were just another to add to the list!

Even with this dose of reality thrust upon Thrush, though, he entered into adulthood as happy and content as ever. The pegasus had acquired his own cozy little cloud cottage well within Ponyville airspace, and found a quaint little occupation as a mane and tail stylist! He loved the lengthy conversations and one-on-one time he got to spend with anypony needing his services, and friendships blossomed as a result. There was little more the plump stallion could ask for in his pleasant lifestyle.

That is, until Cream Caramel entered the picture. The mare of Blue Thrush’s dreams that he met in a family-run candy shop of hers by chance one day. She was shorter than him, a brown-furred earth pony with a creamy underbelly, sporting a rather long mane and tail. She was the most cuddly equine he’d ever had the good fortune to snuggle with! The two hit it off pretty smoothly, going out together for quite a while. His parents, who’d recently retired and returned to their former Cloudsdale home, approved and were very happy for him. Dinner with Cream Caramel’s parents wasn’t quite so straightforward, but his kindness shone through, and a mother that was usually very picky on who went out with her daughter approved of Blue.

Cream Caramel and Blue Thrush eventually wed and became a happy chubby couple of ponies. There was one last surprising truth for the blue pegasus to discover about Cream, one that would make Blue think back to that conversation he had with his parents, but he would overcome it, and would also be forever changed on certain points of view.

What was this truth? That’s for another story!

This revelation to Blue didn’t shake the two ponies’ love one bit, and Blue accepted everything Cream Caramel had to offer. Blue and Cream live in Ponyville together to this day, both running the candy shop (with Blue’s former occupation becoming more of a hobby) and enjoying each other’s company very much.

Introducing Perch the Rattata
Blue Thrush is the kind of pony you'd expect to see in the n(e)igh-utopian world that is the world of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. He's a very friendly, very huggable equine who wants nothing more out of life than a cozy relaxing home, a good pony-appropriate meal, and someone to cuddle or just hang out with! The lazy life of Blue Thrush is a byproduct of his upbringing and living in an environment that (save for the occasional chaos that comes with living in this magical land) is peaceful and easy-going. Blue's a pony who tries to be friends with everyone, who wears his heart on his sleeve, and tries to get the most out of life.

This character is, I believe, the first-ever "OC" I'd ever made. At the time it wasn't even a character geared towards anything except for lighthearted roleplay, featuring cheesy slice of life storylines and such that wouldn't be strange to see in an episode of MLP: FiM. He's gotten a few iterations over the years (he actually started out as a unicorn!), and is now subjected to the kinds of stories I weave nowadays. The kind of tales and endings that would most certainly not be found in an episode! That doesn't stop the lighthearted stuff from happening, however, and canonically-speaking Blue is not a part of the fare I usually write. But, being a pony living in a world that has more than enough food (usually sugary-sweet) that he overindulges in, it's no surprise that others may find him being a pony to invite over to dinner.
