The stare? Uhg, that was entirely tacked on to give Fluttershy a scary-story-threat to keep the CMC in line. It was stupid to begin with, and never got better. It should have been conveniently forgotten instead of jumped on by people who wanted Fluts to have a mysterious chunibyou power. They chose poorly. It would be better if Fluttershy was too scared to open her eyes. In the original, she just kept backing away and gradually stopped talking out of shyness- and then she saw Spike.

Hmm. I like the stare. I like the idea that pegasi and earth ponies have inner inate magic that can reveal itself as they discover their talents, besides simply "walk on clouds" and "good with plants". In that sense Fluttershy's stare makes sense to me. It's innate magic that she can use to help her care for animals. For example when fear/instinct takes over and there is not other way to reach an animal.
This could also be (somewhat) of an explanation for Pinkie. I read one fanfic that hinted at alicorn ancestry in her lineage. If you don't have a horn to actively cast spells, how would alicorn magic manifest itself? Why not as Pinkie's.... Pinkieness? It works for me *Shrugs*.

Coldblood does have some sort of inner-magic system going on, but there's better things to use Fluttershy for than "the stare." Even the Care Bears had their stare really be tummy lasers. Unless F is going to start with the X-Men Cyclops lasers, the only reason for her Jughead eyes is that she's too scared to open them. But she's shy, not a scaredy cat. -understand animals.- emotionally clairvoyant. -can fly, but would rather be on the ground with the animals. -is a werewolf, the hulk, 80s movie monster. Just hasn't reached her Irredeemable breaking point. -might be the one cleaning up the "white robes and altar" group's 'forest camping spot'. Just to keep it clean for the forest animals. -can summon the forest animals, but doesn't want to wake any of them up from their nap. -wants to be a tree, but can fly up there anyway. Introducing the stare in F's first appearance is about as rushed as having her just wake up from losing her virginity because the brother that was introduced several years later just roofied her in the forest. Cold doesn't respect the story progression pacing, but he can't just turn Fluttershy the meek and modest into a death laser, or Mandelbrot eyes.
As for Pinkie, I liked the first Inky, Blinky, and Pinky origin she had, but the rock farm is ok too. She was always like a wandering extra-dimensional unnameable creature that gravitated to a different plane (FIM) because she overheard someone's birthday party and wanted to start a food fight play with the noisemaker horn with the paper tube on it.

I was under the impression that CBT was trying to allude to Philososhy as being a cosmic entity of such unfathomable power that if they opened their eyes and one would stare into the abyss, the collective multitude would pour their knowledge into you or suck it out, similar to what would happen if you looked into the eyes of the Pokemon Uxie.
I suppose 'the stare' thing could be a different explanation, but... given I know some of the ponies the Cold Storm cast is meant to be based on...

given I know some of the ponies the Cold Storm cast is meant to be based on... Do tell, I'd like to know about this series, at all. To me it looks like Cold is whipping it up by himself, but if he's cribbing expys from somewhere I'd like to know about it. Also, given that the monster at the end of the book is Celestia's sister, I'd like read ahead to see which pone walks the Pattern of Amber or something. We haven't even gotten to the fabulous Pan Lung dragon.

Cold Storm conceptually got it's start as the origin story for CBT's Tumblr ask blog, forming an AU Mane 6 out of various friends who ran Tumblrs based on various ponies.
While seemingly not still a one-to-one, you'll note design queues like Rainbow Dash wearing Latex much like Kinky Rainbow Dash/KRD. Rarity wears an eyepatch because she's based on Lil' Mizz Jay's "Ask Lil' Miss Rarity" blog where Rarity was basically Sweeny Todd. Fluttershy is based on Philososhy, a blog wherein Fluttershy achieved absolute omniscience and became a being of serenity and philosophy... hence the name. I cannot for the life of me remember where she pulled her Applejack or Pinkie from (although funnily enough, CBT herself was largely inspired by Ask Hot-Blooded Pinkie Pie, so maybe there's a bit of that there?)

I didn't now any of these behind the scenes stuff (do you have any idea how many pony tumblers there have been?!) and thought that CB was making this stuff up as he went along- just extra cooler and dangerous but still the 1st episode of the FIM series. And it's still on the first episode of the 2 parter... I thought Cold-blooded Twilight was the same guy who did the Hot-blooded Pinkie Pie comic. In case he's not, I don't know if I should say that the art's improved, and therefore insult the first guy. :derp:
