Unlike a person, a factory could be modified to have a completely different set of incoming materials and internal machinery to manufacture a different product, at which point it would emit different waste out of its smokestacks. However, changing the label on the product or the emissions doesn't change the actual factual nature of the emissions themselves.
This was inspired by a scene in a book that takes place in a dystopian future of mass government gaslighting, in which the ruling class pretends to be environmentally friendly when it very much isn't (among many other things). The book is called Equality by Daniel Watts, and is available for sale on Amazon as of this posting.
