Once upon a time, at a village in the Hill Top Zone inhabited by rabbits, one rabbit named Vanilla has given birth to a baby girl. The newborn had cream fur with brown eyes and markings.
"Hey, what a sweet little girl," a male rabbit said.
"You're so kind, Ernie," Vanilla said.
"No, I mean it, this kid is really something," Ernie said. As he walked to get a drink, an elderly hare came by and saw the child.
"A fine looking girl, I say. A very fine looking girl," the hare said.
"Why, thank you," Vanilla said.
"And you know, there may be a thing or more about this little one than just her beauty," the hare said as Vector came back.
"Well, we hope so, too," Vector said.
"And she may have quite a future ahead of her," the hare said.
"That is awfully sweet of you to..," Vanilla said when she saw the hare was gone.
"Who was that," Vanilla asked herself.
Six years later, Vanilla took her daughter to the Chao Garden, where she would meet all the different Chao living there. As she played with the Chao, the hare appeared again.
"So, you took your daughter here," the hare said.
"Cream? She was looking for a Chao of her own," Vanilla said.
"I see. I wonder if she can take care of one," the hare said.
"Oh, she is able to. Chao are gentle creatures who can bond with a person," Vanilla said when Cream is seen with a chao. Later, Cream would be seen taking piano lessons with her mother.
Two years later, Cream, Vanilla, and the Chao, now known as Cheese, were about to have a picnic. Cream and Cheeese went off to play in the field.
"Don't wander too far," Vanilla said as she got everything ready. Suddenly, a rockslide came from the nearby mountain, and headed towards Vanilla. Cream saw this and ran to her. As she did, she felt a power surge through her, as her form chaged. She jumped up and grabbed the boulder, lifting it, then trying to head to her mother, her legs feeling wobbley.
"Momma, are you alright," Cream asked when she fell.
"Whoever you are, you saved my life," Vanilla said.
"Mom, it's me," Cream said as she looked at herself. Her fur had changed to a white color, with red stripes on her arms and legs. Her dress had changed from orange to blue and had stars on it, the bow being red. Her shoes were also blue-and-red and had wheels attached to them. She saw her reflection in a plate, and saw her markings were blue with white stars, her eyes were blue, and a white stripe was over her eyes.
"Gosh, what happened to me," Cream asked.
"Maybe I can explain," a voice said.
"Is someone there," Vanilla asked as the hare came by, now dressed in robes.
"That was great work with the boulder, Cream. A perfect catch," the hare said as he touched the young rabbit, which changed her back to normal, at Vanilla's shock.
"Thanks. I was worried it would be permanent," Cream said as Cheese hugged her.
Later, the hare joined the family as he did some explaining.
"I know this seems wierd, but I should explain. As long as time itself, this quiet little village has provided the world a very special hero," the hare said.
"A hero," Vanilla asked.
"Yes. A hero that works to make the outside world a better, happier place," the hare said.
"You mean the legacy," Vanilla asked.
"Legacy? What legacy," Cream asked in confusion.
"A legacy is a tale passed down from generation to generation, honey," Vanilla said.
"Indeed, and our legacy is one of strength, compassion, and gustos. Once every generation, a rabbit is chosen, and while no one else knows it, Cream has been chosen to become that hero, the American Rabbit," the hare said, as Vanilla cried.
"But, sir, I am only six years old. Don't you think I'm too young for this kind of work," Cream asked.
"No, no. Despite your age, you have shown a good heart and great speed. Besides, a young feller is needed, especially with the crazy hours you have to work," the hare said.
"Then this is goodbye," Cream asked, all teary-eyed.
"Cream, don't worry about me. I know we will be seperated, but think, you have been given a gift. If I were you, I would leave home and use that gift for the good of those outside this village," Vanilla said.
"And you won't be alone. Your chao will be with you along the way," the hare said as Cheese hugged Cream.
After that, Cream and Cheese left home. Deciding to test our her powers, she ran, transforming into her new form as she took to the sky, Cheese following her. After the flight, she managed to changed back to her normal self by saying her name.
"Cheese, can you keep this between us? If anyone find out I am the American Rabbit, they could be in danger," Cream asked.
"Chao," Cheese said, nodding.
"Great. Let's go to the nearest city. That will be a good place to start," Cream said as she and Cheese ran down the road.
