I imagine intelligent cetaceans would put a lot of value into being able to hold their breath a long time, so while a human would consider this a bad idea, a test like this would be a fairly important thing to this guy.

*at the surface of a deep ocean was this whale, taking some deep breathes as they prepare for a deep dive in the water, holding onto the cable that they will use to pull themselves down to the destination... just when it was gonna happen, a little riolu saw this whale and got curious on what they were doing, so they come closer and tap on them* (No this is not reno, it's a different one, lol)

"It's not because of the pressure, I can shockingly handle it well, my breath hold time just isn't the best, my record is 12 minutes, and I wanted to aim for 30 minutes...heh"

"If it ends up being too much, there's a button to stop the descent early, so don't worry about that. It'll take about 5 minutes to get all the way down, and another 5 to go back up, so how long do you want to stay at the bottom?"

Eventually, in the last few seconds, the whale's breathing speeds up before he holds his breath, puffing his cheeks and refilling through his blowhole to have a little extra air.

Just after they've both started holding their breath, the cable starts to pull them down, quickly bringing them underwater, deeper and deeper.

*the sudden pull of the cable made the riolu surprised, but he mostly remains unfazed as they close their eyes and try to relax, holding onto the cable and scooting closer to the whale for comfort, keeping their nose pinched shut*

About a minute passes and the surface is no longer visible, the water pressure starting to become obvious. The two are already deeper than the riolu's record, and they'll still be going for a while longer.

*the riolu whimpers a bit as he feels the growing pressure, but seems to be handling it well, they equalize it, then open their eyes to come a little closer to the whale then close them again, the thoughts of being so far from the surface made the riolu feel nervous*

The whale keeps the riolu close, knowing the water is going to get a bit cold as they go even deeper. The light from the surface is starting to dim at this point.

A couple more minutes pass, the whale keeping still while continuing to hug the riolu. The cable's lights come on as the duo pass the 500 feet mark, and the whale looks at the riolu to make sure they're still okay.

*the riolu opens his eyes to look around, noticing its getting pretty dark, but is happy that there's at least some light, he clearly looks a bit more nervous, pinching his nose to help equalize the pressure a bit, bubbles escaping him as his face is slightly red, but he's determined to try and make it all the way down, nuzzling the whale to keep calm*

The whale still appears to be doing just fine, even in this depth. After a while longer, the cable finally stops, the two divers reaching their goal of 800 feet underwater. The whale smiles at the riolu, impressed at their endurance.

*noticing they are at 800 ft, the riolu couldn't help but smile, slightly puffing his cheeks up now as his tail wags happily, still slightly nervous but is happy none the less, blowing out a couple bubbles to ease his lungs a bit*

Relaxing now, the whale lets go of the cable to just float in the water, still hugging the riolu and giving them a couple pats on the back.

*the riolu is slowly growing more calm with the help of the whale, he let's go of the cable as well to float with the whale, looking up at the surface which is no where in sight, the thought of being so deep underwater made the riolu smile a bit, as if he accomplished something, he looks at the whale with a big smile on his face, hugging him a bit tighter as he slowly kicks to stay in place, even kissing the whale a little*

Deciding to return the favor, he reaches up to plug up the whale's blowhole gently, hugging him with his other free arm hoping it's helping them relax further*

Feeling the riolu's hand on his blowhole is strange for a moment, but the whale quickly warms up to it since it lets him relax the muscles up there without losing air. He kisses the riolu back to thank them.

Still holding the riolu's nose, the whale is starting to get impressed by how long they can hold their breath, though he can tell they'll be needing air from him before the ascent starts.

*It's actually been 20 minutes since they submerged, and the riolu doesn't even know that he's beating his record, the cable has a timer for how long they have been submerged and the riolu hasn't paid any attention to it, still trying to stay calm as the whale keeps pinching the riolu's nose*

The whale isn't keeping track of time either, but is obviously straining now, occasional grunting audible as his chest heaves. His cheeks aren't just puffed to store air any more, the whale now feeling like he doesn't have a choice but to keep them inflated.

The whale's starting to get a bit nervous as well, but he wants to stay down longer for now. He finally looks over at the timer and his eyes go wide, seeing that he and the riolu have been underwater for just over 21 minutes. Smiling, he points over at the timer to make sure the riolu sees it as well.

*the riolu looks at the timer and his mouth almost drops open in shock... his eyes go wide instead... he couldn't believe he's beating his record at that he's sooo close to 30 minutes, his original goal. Seeing the motivation made the riolu want to stay down longer as well, confidently striking a fighting pose before going back to relaxing, his face still fairly red*

For the first time since going under, a few bubbles leak past the whale's lips as his struggles slowly increase, his blush spreading across his face. He tries his best to keep relaxing, but he's unable to stay still, squirming in place from his need to breathe.

*noticing the whale's struggle brought the riolu back to reality, now his face is slowly turning blue, but he refuses to give in, bubbles escaping his mouth frequently, having to use his other arm to cover it, nervously looking up at the timer which now says 26 and a half minutes*

With his face entirely purple, the whale looks over at the timer, and while his eyes go wide again, this time it's from fear, unsure if he'll be able to hold his breath the 5 minutes it'll take to surface. He quickly swims to the cable and grabs it, looking at the riolu to make sure they do the same.

The whale quickly starts the cable's ascent, and he and the riolu start heading back up. He holds one hand against his mouth and the other on his blowhole to keep his air in, hooking an arm around the cable to keep holding it as well.

A minute passes, and the whale whimpers as he realizes he's likely not going to reach the surface before his lungs give out. Bubbles occasionally slip past his hands and he tightly shuts his eyes, starting to shiver a little.

The whale doesn't even smile at the riolu's attempt to help, his lungs fiercely burning as a slight dizziness starts to form in his head. He looks down at the timer, realizing he's beaten his record at this point, but he hardly cares.

*3 more agonizing minutes later, the light is becoming visible from the surface, they are almost there! But the riolu's lungs are burning quite a bit, now worrying if he's gonna make it, tightly shutting his eyes*

Somehow still managing to force himself to hold his breath, the whale blearily looks up at the surface, feeling sleepy as parts of him start to go numb. Bubbles are constantly trickling from his mouth and blowhole despite his efforts, and he almost certainly won't be able to last another minute.
