Slimes inactive will become active once enough time has passed. granted they will revert to their first phase upon being inactive. some are bigger than the others and they are considered to be a candidate for the next phase once they get enough as the others must continue to search for more stuff to eat. if an end of a world scenario was to take place, inactivity is necessary. Any DNA left behind from the bones of the past and or wildlife of the new world. The slimes will rebuild what was lost many eons ago, piece by piece, scrap by scrap even. The ultimate goal of these creatures is not to destroy but preserve anything that has passed on and or survive. slimes die all of the time, but a small part of them always survives in other copies and can be replicated.
The question is how can you kill something that just won't die. Easier said than done starve the source of any resources. War is nothing new to these slimes as factions pop up from time to time and kingdoms, tribes and even societies fall. History will always repeat itself and peace will never be permanent.
