I imagine it would be pretty great to be able to sleep underwater, especially if you could just hold your breath the whole time. This snake can hold it for a couple hours if he keeps still, just long enough for a short nap on the bottom of a river. Once he wakes up, though, he usually needs air pretty bad.

squirtlerocks07 and I did an RP based on this.

S: on a calm day in the relatively shallow lake, Emi the shiny squirtle was going for a nice swim, he has his goggles on his forehead as he lazily swims around, without a care in the world

L: Occasionally, little bubbles come up from a part of the lake. It seems like someone might be down there, and not going anywhere.

S: noticing the tiny bubbles, emi got confused...wondering what could be down there, he swims over to that part of the lake, then takes some deep breathes, putting on his goggles before holding his breath and diving down to investigate, this part wasn't all that deep at all, and it didn't take him long to reach the bottom

L: Emi can see that a large snake is coiled up on the bottom! Its eyes are closed, and it's not moving, but there's no sign that it's in trouble... In fact, it seems to be napping!

S: emi tilts his head to the side, still a bit confused as he sees this large snake on the bottom, noticing it may be napping, he gently touches the snake to try and get it's attention

L: The snake shifts a little, before groggily opening their eyes. "Mmmh...Leblt mble slbleep..."

S: "Ablre yblou....oblk?" The snake could see emi look at them, touching them a bit more, noticing how tired they are...and he's never seen someone sleep underwater before either

L: "Yebls, Ibl'm fiblne... Ibl gubless yoblu dobln't knblow thblat snblakes cabln hblold thbleir brbleatblh abl loblng tiblme."

S: "Rbleally? Nblo I dblidnt knblow thblat... hmm... sblorry fblor boblthering yblou thblen..." emi's tail droops sadly, afraid the snake might have gotten upset with emi for waking him up

L: The snake uncoils and gets up. "Itbl's fiblne, Ibl cobluld usble soblme aiblr anblywably." He hops off the bottom and starts swimming up to the surface.

S: emi follows and soon the two reach the surface and emi gasps lightly for breath
"You know, you looked pretty comfortable sleeping down there, no strain no fear... you looked very peaceful, heh"

L: The snake lightly gasps as well. "Yeah, I really like sleeping underwater. Nice and quiet, and it's rare that I get woken up early by anything."

S: "That sounds nice... I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night because either I had a nightmare or I just woke up to some kind of sound, even when you talk it's peaceful...I bet that's how relaxing sleeping underwater is huh?"

L: "Yep, it's always really nice. If you're good enough at holding your breath, you should try it out sometime."

S: "Well, I'm not THAT good at breath holding, but I am pretty proud of myself for getting my record to 21 minutes"

L: "I don't know whether that'd be enough for this... Sleeping should extend it, but I can already manage an hour and a half awake."

S: "Dang really? Wow... an hour and a half awake is really good... I guess I won't know until I actually try sleeping underwater..."

L: "Worth a shot, I originally wasn't sure I could do it either. I can keep an eye on you just in case."

S: "Well...I am feeling a little bit sleepy today, didn't get much rest last night... my parents were up all night yelling at each other and I barely got any rest..."

L: "That sounds awful... I hope that doesn't happen very often. And, hopefully this'll be able to make up for that lost sleep."

S: "No thankfully it doesn't happen very much, but everyone once in a while they get like that, you know how couples can be"

L: "Yeah, it just happens sometimes, I understand. But anyway, get some deep breaths, and we'll both head back down together."

S: "Alright then!" emi then starts to deeply breathe to get ready for a potentially long dive

L: The snake does so as well, even though he's pretty sure he won't really have to worry about it.

S: eventually emi seems to be ready to go, taking a last deep breath before plugging his nose and diving back underwater

L: The snake holds his breath as well, joining Emi underwater and starting to swim down with them.

S: eventually they get back to the bottom, emi flips around to stand on the bottom, knowing the snake will be here soon

L: Settling onto the bottom next to them, the snake coils himself up again. "Yoblu cabln usble mble abls abl piblloblw, Ibl dobln't miblnd."

S: "Thblanks..." emi smiles before starting to lay down, he rests his little head on the snake's body, smiling more on how comfortable it is

L: The snake smiles as well, feeling better about helping Emi than he expected. He rests his own head on Emi's chest.

S: emi closes his eyes and tries his best to fall asleep, his cheeks lightly puffy with air as he let's very small bubbles escape him

L: As he'd said he would, the snake keeps watch over Emi to make sure nothing bad happens.

S: eventually emi manages to finally fall asleep a bit, his cheeks remained puffed as they are just a very tiny bit red, but he's very far away from any real strain

L: The snake is able to tell Emi's fallen asleep, and smiles at them as he relaxes some as well.

S: emi smiles in his sleep, shifting just a little to get more comfortable

L: The snake very gently and slowly moves Emi more onto himself, making himself essentially a bed for them instead of just a pillow.

S: emi certainly appreciates that, wrapping his arms around the snake in a hug to get even more comfortable, sighing out a few bubbles calmly

L: The snake gently hugs Emi back, lightly wrapping his body around them as a few little bubbles of his own leave his nostrils.

S: emi smiles even more at that, his face slowly getting a bit more red, but he's remains peacefully asleep

L: Seeing how happy Emi is, the snake smiles more as he waits for them to eventually start getting restless.

S: emi's smile remains on his face, his tail is even wagging gently as well...it seems he's so comfortable he's probably not gonna get restless for a while

L: Even though he told Emi he would stay awake to watch them, the snake starts to get a little bit bored... He closes his eyes, just assuming that Emi will be fine and wanting to get back to sleep himself for a while.

S: emi continues to smile as he rests for a while, his face slowly growing more red overtime

L: Fairly soon, the snake falls asleep as well, still keeping himself lightly wrapped around Emi.

S: a long time has passed since then, and emi has beaten his breath holding record by a long shot! They've been down for roughly 45 minutes, and that's when emi starts to finally get restless, tossing and turning a bit while whining out more bubbles as his face is fully red, slowly turning bluer then normal

L: The snake has a bit of a blush by now as well, just not nearly as intense as what Emi has. He's still perfectly calm, though.

S: after about 5 more minutes, emi grunts in strain, whimpering in his sleep, he keeps tossing and turning for a while, and eventually he wakes up, covering his mouth before trying to get the snake's attention

L: The snake slowly wakes up before too long. "Soblrry Ibl febll asbleep, goblt boblred... Oblh!" He quickly lets go of Emi so they can swim up.

S: emi quickly bolts up to the surface, quickly getting there before too long and gasping heavily for air

L: The snake pushes off the bottom like he's a spring, joining Emi at the surface in just a couple seconds. "So, how do you feel now?"

S: emi catches his breath and sighs happily
"Wow! I feel so much more refreshed then I was when I first met you! That felt really good! Question is, how long were we down there"

L: "I'm not really sure how long that was... I'm almost certain it was over half an hour though, I can say that much."

S: "What?! Wow! I must have destroyed my record or something! Amazing! And I feel great!"

L: "Told you it'd make a difference! Sleeping underwater seems like it might be more effective for you than it is for me!"

S: "Wow... that was great! Thanks for showing me that little snake, oh I never told you my name didn't I, I'm emi"

L: "You're welcome! And, my name's Sareth."

S: "Nice to meet you Sareth... phew, I'm full of energy now! Haha! But I think my lungs need a rest"

"And I'm sure yours are kind of tired too, heh"

L: "Same here, yeah. Think I'm gonna head out, I've been in this lake for a couple hours now." Sareth starts swimming back toward the shore.

S: "Jeez that long? Wow" emi also begins to swim back to shore

L: "Yeah, I really like swimming. That's part of why I can hold my breath so long, I tend to push myself when I'm underwater."

S: "Dang, I mean I love to swim myself, I don't usually like to push myself unless I have to or I feel like it one day"

L: "Fair enough, I don't imagine it's a common thing to do what I do."

S: "Yeah, heh..." eventually they get to shore
"I remember one time I really pushed myself one day... almost drowned, and since then I've been extra careful about this stuff"

L: "Good thing you're okay, yeah... I've gone too far like that a couple times, from going too deep underwater while testing myself."

S: "Wow, yeah that's a bit dangerous...being far from the surface and pushing yourself all in one? Not good"

L: "Yeah, I make sure not to do that any more. It's really not a good idea."

S: "Not at all, heh... but this was really nice, now I caught up on my sleep and I'm good to go"

L: "Yep, same here. Hope we happen to meet up again sometime, Emi!"

S: "Yeah I hope so too sareth!"
emi smiles and gives sareth a big hug

L: Sareth wraps himself around Emi again in a hug of his own, playfully flicking his tongue at them a little too.

S: emi giggles at that, nuzzling sareth a bit as he relaxes into the hug

L: "We haven't exactly known each other for very long, but I think you're a pretty cool guy, Emi."

S: "Aww really? Well I think your really cool too Sareth! Thank you!"

L: "Nice!" Sareth unwraps from around Emi, waving his tail. "See you again sometime!"

S: "Bye Sareth! Take care of yourself ok?" emi waved back as he started to walk away, smiling at Sareth one more time before disappearing into a forest
