Prehysterical Critters — Ceratogaulus, the Horned Gopher

What the honk!  It's a horned gopher, the smallest known horned mammal.  Don't think you'll find it on the Great Plains of Nebraska anymore, though.

i blame air cans. 135 decibels can blow away any species.

Now that big, honkin' event would have been a huge blast. :o

I'm glad people are finding Ceratogaulus an interesting (if extinct) rodent to know. :)

How many said fossils were found ?
If just one, it was likely a freak...

Wikipedia doesn't say, but apparently, there were quite a few fossils found.  Even if there were only one, analyses of the bones' structure would tell if it was disease-caused or not or if were an abnormality.  The horns have been analyzed to death (so to speak) and were found to be poor at digging nor likely used for mating displays or fights due to the gophers' poor eyesight.  Their most likely function was defense as a predator going for the neck would get struck pretty hard by the horns.

They also weren't the only digging mammal to develop horns.  The horned armadillo Peltephilus of southern South America some 10 to 30 million years ago also developed similar nose horns, possibly for the same reason.
