My father looked down at his newspaper as i held my left paw firmly over a large cut in my right arm, trying to cover the blood dripping from the wound. As I crept forward, tears fell from my eyes, a sure sign of the pain I was feeling, inside and out.
He dropped his newspaper to his lap as he heard me approaching, and his eyes went wide. He clearly saw the blood seeping through the fur under my paw.
I stood there, shivering. Afraid to look at the damage to my right arm. I felt helpless, frightened, my tail was motionless as i looked up at him with tearful eyes, almost scared to get in trouble.
To my surprise, he smiled. My eyes suddenly went a bit wide, looking at his unusually cheerful expression. With two strong, warm paws, he picked me up in his arms, holding my small frame to his rather large body, trying to calm me down, and with quiet words, he spoke to me.
That was the best moment I have memory of with my father. Him simply consoling me, telling me I would be alright, despite all the frayed turmoil running through my eight-year-old mind.
