"Nice shirt," my mom says as I sit on the front porch, waiting for my date to pick me up.

I haven't been waiting long. He wasn't supposed to be here for another fifteen minutes, but I got ready early so he wouldn't have to wait for me, or deal with my crazy family. My date for the evening is a polar bear. I never actually expected him to ask me out. I see him at school once in a while and a popular kid despite being shy. I'm just your average teenage black wolf girl. His purple hair gets him plenty of attention because he somehow makes the color look natural.

I can't stop fidgeting. Not because I'm impatient but because I'm so excited! I've never been on a date with a popular guy and I'm nervous about making a good impression. I didn't want to dress too fancy, but at the same time being too casual didn't seem right either. After hours of debate I decided on a black t-shirt with a 'Blood on the Dance Floor' logo, black jeans and a wolf pendant. Its my favorite outfit, but I rarely wear it because I think it makes me look too Goth, or Punk.

A brown van pulls into my driveway and rolls down the window to reveal a smiling polar bear. I half expected a sports car with how popular he is, but its refreshing to know his parents drive the same kind of crappy car as mine.

"Hi, ready to go?" the polar bear asks shyly.

"Sure thing!" I answer, prancing down the steps and waving goodbye to my family.

When I get into the passenger seat of the van I'm even more surprised, seeing that his dress is just as informal. He is wearing boot cut blue jeans with a white t-shirt that blends in well with his fur. Printed on the t-shirt in black is a smiling face and the words “U MAD BRO?”, a common inside joke known to many teenagers in our school.

"I love  your shirt." I comment.

The polar bear looks me over before putting the van in reverse. I have lime green fur covering the tips of my ears, paws, feet, and tail. I can see a bit of jealousy in his eyes as he looks at the tips of my paws and feet. Maybe because he is just a plain polar bear? He notices my own t-shirt and smiles.

"Thanks, your outfit is really cool. It complements your fur." he replies.

As he drives to the festival, we spend the ride chatting about school. We talk about favorite classes and teachers, classmates, grades, etc. He prefers music and history, while I lean towards art and science. After we pull into a parking space at the local park that the festival is being held, I gasp as the festival comes into view. I'm so excited, I have to contain myself not to jump out of the car before my date finishes parking. My seatbelt flies off and I run to the park entrance to get the best view.

Our park is large enough to hold a small Ferris wheel, bumper cars, a few spinning rides, and still have plenty of room for the smaller games. The  festival brings the night to life with all its lights. There are small, colorful Christmas lights hanging about every which way, huge flashing lights from the rides and games, and Japanese style lamps floating around. Here and there parents chase after their screaming children, who are high off sugar or can‘t sleep with all the noise, but otherwise the park has a calm, romantic aura to it.

I easily get lost in the joy of the crowd, bouncing on the balls of my feet as I do my very best to wait for my date to lock up the car and join me at the entrance. We walk together to the box office to get tickets, with my date having to take huge steps to keep pace with me. After we get the tickets my date lets me choose what we ride first, which was of course bumper cars. It was so fun we ended up going for three rounds before we got bored of pounding into each other.

"Want to play Floating Ducks?" He asks me as I pass by the game.

"Yeah!" I say excitedly, after spinning around.

There are yellow plastic ducks that spin in a small wading pool around the game shop, each duck having a number on the bottom that ranges from one to three. Normally there are two dozen ducks; ten are marked with "1", eight are marked with "2" and six are marked with "3", giving small, medium and large prizes accordingly.  Its cheap to play, and you always win.

"I'm not very good at this game." I admit, watching the ducks float.

"That's okay, I normally have pretty good luck. You pick first." He coaxes me.

I watch the ducks swim around and think I see a “1” on the bottom of a duck as it wiggles. I snatch it up and quickly spin it upside down.

"Its a three." I say in despair.

"Congratulations!" The old goat behind the counter yells. "That nets you a phone charm little lady.  Which one would you like to take home?"

There is surprisingly wide selection, animals of every shape and color dangle from the small wall on the right of the shop. I can't decide weather I want the purple leopard, the green dragon, or the black rabbit with a halo.

"Can I have that one?" Pointing to the purple leopard, it seems more my style.

The shop keeper hands me the small phone charm. As I take my phone out and try to figure out how to put it on, Frost picks up a duck with a "2" on the bottom. He gets to pick a key chain. There is an even wider selection of key chains, from humans to video games, animes, interesting designs and chibi styled animals.

"I'm stuck between that icicle design, or the chibi polar bear. Which do you like better?" He asks me as he holds them in front of me.

I have to giggle before answering, the chibi polar bear is adorable. "I like the polar bear, he's so cuuute!"

He hands the shop keeper back the icicle key chain before bringing out his car keys. We walk towards the picnic area of the park, where all the food is being held for the fair. He's still playing with his new key chain as we enter the line for a cheap burger stand. After we get our food we sit down at a table made for two. He finally gets the key chain to cooperate long enough to get all his keys around it before he drops his keys under the table.

"Chibi-kun giving you enough trouble there?" I ask with a giggle, after watching him struggle with it so long I can‘t stop laughing at the irony.

"Apparently not. Kids sure can be a pain!" He answers, laughing gently as he retrieves his keys.

"What are you up for next? We've still got five tickets left, right?"

"Yeah, so we have enough for one big ride, or we could do a large prize game and the Ferris wheel."

"Alright, well how about a game then? If the prize is big enough we could share it.' I say, smiling gently at him, secretly hoping he gets the hint that I would want to hang out with him again.

"That sounds fun! We could pass it around at school."

We make our way back to the game shops to try our luck at the harder games. We pick Milk Can; the object is to toss at least one of three softballs into a 10-gallon metal milk can from a line about four to six feet away. Its pretty simple, but I've never been able to win. I take the first try and fail miserably, my ball flying far over the top of the metal can. Frost tries next and nails it.

"Nice shot!" I say in awe after I hear the ball clank on the bottom.

"Thanks, Nighty. There's a trick to it, you know. Want me to show you?" He says with a smile.

He takes the last ball and gently puts it in my hand.

"The trick is to throw it just like this..." He instructs as he slowly pulls my arm back and down, while turning my hand up. "If you throw it like this, the ball will spin into the jug."

In a smooth and quick motion he uses my arm to toss the ball into the metal jug, like gracefully hitting the bulls eye. The entire time I can't stop thinking about how smooth his skin is, how warm it feels. Frost and the shop keeper are talking, but I don't hear them. I just keep staring at Frost and holding my hand in front of me, still feeling his warmth on it.

"Hey Nighty, you alive in there?" Frost says, waving his hand in my face.

"Huh? Oh, yeah. What's up?" I answered, blushing slightly as I realize that he has been asking me questions for a few minutes now.

"I asked you which one you wanted. Since we got two out of three we get a medium prize, one of the big plushies. You can pick. I'm fine with any of them."

I look over the prizes, and only one jumps out at me. "How about the blue wolf?"

"A fine pick my fare lady!" The shop keeper comments, getting the plushie off the rafters.

"Interesting pick. What made you choose that one?" Frost asks.

"It just reminds me of a close friend." I say as I hug the plushy.

Next we head towards the Ferris wheel. I haven't told him I'm afraid of heights or that I've never been on one. I don't mind fighting my fears, as long as he is with me. When we get inside the small booth, his arm touches mine making my face suddenly feel like fire. We have to sit so close that our arms and legs are touching during the entire ride. I can't stop thinking about how he's touching me.

Okay he isn't doing it on purpose, but he's still touching me. My body feels like pure electricity by the time the ride is over .  I'm sad that we can't stay longer, but we're out of tickets and its getting late. We walk back to the car, talking about school and how much fun we've had. When we get to the car, he revs up the engine but doesn't go to leave the park just yet.

"I have a surprise for you." Frost says, pulling onto a dirt road I didn't know existed.

We're barely in the park, climbing up the large hill that stands in the back of the park. We come to a small clearing, an old parking lot that has gone unkempt for years. Frost turns the van around and turns off the vehicle. He gets a small blanket out of the back of the van and places it on the ground just at the edge of the cliff that overlooks the park.

I get out of the car, blue wolf plushy in hand, and walk to the small picnic that Frost set up, staring in wonder at the fair beneath us. The ground below looks like a shimmering sea, from the lights of the carnival. As I sit down, he brings out a small timer, it starts at fifteen and is working its way down.

"So this is your surprise? Its beautiful." I say in awe, staring at the starlit sky and the bright park grounds.

"You haven't seen anything yet. This counter aint for nothing you know." He points to the counter, which has just reached ten. "Feel like counting with me?"

"Sure." I answer, before taking a deep breath and joining him.

"Nine" We say together. "Eight. Seven. Six. Five. Four." I see a small fire start in the distance, on the far end of the park. "Three. Two. One. Zero!"

As we finish counting a red light flies into the sky, far away from the carnival. The light explodes in the sky, bursting into shining shards. A new flash ignites the sky in blue, then green, creating a smile over the stars. The atmosphere is soon enveloped by wonderful flashes. The fireworks quickly create glimpses of faces, stars, and animals. The sight is amazing, and awe inspiring.

I look at Frost only to see him staring back at me, the flashing lights illuminating his face. I feel my face turn crimson as I blush under his gaze. His eyes are so bright, brighter then the shimmering sea below us, brighter than even the fireworks. Our hands touch, ever so gently, making me blush harder from the single touch. The finale draws my attention back to the fireworks.

The wonderful ending to the light show fills the night with multiple smiling faces, brilliant manmade stars, and a glowing fountain of sparkles. Slowly, the smiles and stars begin to fade, and the fountain starts to steadily delve back to earth. Frost squeezes my hand slightly, bringing my attention back to his bright eyes. I melt under his penetrating eyes, which feel like they are looking into my very soul.

My heart rushes as he moves closer, his breath softly brushing my face. I lean towards him, our lips are just centimeters apart. When we finally kiss its tender, delicate, sweet, the touch sending powerful jolts throughout my entire body. We pull away after eleven amazing seconds, leaving a warm feeling deep inside me. He smiles at me, lightly rubbing my hand with his thumb.

"Its almost curfew for me, sorry." I tell him, still staring into his bright eyes.

"I know, we should get you home." He says, but doesn't make a move to get up.

We sit there for a long while, just staring at each other. We finally set out, leaving the shimmering sea and festival behind us. We arrive at my house in silence, both of us enjoying the afterglow of our kiss. He pulls into my driveway and puts the van in park.

"I had a great time. I hope we can do this again sometime." He says as he looks into the distance.

"Me too. We'll have to work out when to hang again." I answer, smiling at him and trying to stifle a giggle.

I open the door and walk to my front door. He waves at me before driving himself home. I fall asleep the second my head touches the pillow, falling into sweet nothingness as I dream about a life with a polar bear with purple hair.
