You accidentally called Metal Knuckles "Mecha Knuckles". Mecha Knuckles was from Sonic Advanced, and other variations of Mecha Knuckles were from the comics. Metal Knuckles is the one from Sonic R, and also appeared in a few comics I think.

I always known the one in Sonic R as "Mecha Knuckles" that's what they called him in the comics and in the wiki, I'm not sure what's the name of the one from Sonic Advance!
