Today, Sept. 18, is the anniversary of the release of a music landmark, Smiley Smile, by the Beach Boys. It's an album suffused in legend as the 11 tracks that made it to market were the tip of an immense iceberg of ideas, rehearsals, takes and discards; known as the SMiLE sessions; that required a rescue operation—a rescue that presaged what the Beatles would experience as the Get Back sessions were repurposed into Let It Be. Since Get Back/Let It Be is soon to be released in a remastered package, now is a good time to re-appreciate the remastered (2012) version of Smiley Smile which, IMHO, is a more satisfying listen than the 2011 "official" release of SMiLE. In fact, the only real disappointment in the 1967 release is how it ends without a convincing closer. "Whistle In" clocks in at barely a minute and is more a song fragment than an actual song, kind of like "Dig It" from Let It Be. Not the way to end a so highly anticipated album. And thus this post: I have taken another song fragment called "You're Welcome", which was the B-side from "Heroes And Villains", and segued it after "Whistle In". Why this little track was not included in Smiley Smile is unfathomable, but I submit it to you now; and, if you replace "Whistle In" with this MP3 at the end of Smiley Smile on your iTunes, you will have a more satisfying wrap to a won- won- wonderful album. (You're welcome, Brian.)
