Super curious which sort of 'Chaos' this one will be. They say monsters so guessing it will just be the 'make stuff ugly and angry' sort. The real deal isn't good or evil, it's just purely random which would make it way harder to fight so thankfully they are up against something more comprehensible than that.
As for the present focus I think they should just consider centralizing the population as much as possible. Get everyone not tainted in the same best possible location for defense and turtle up. If you can't win offensively win defensively and deny the enemy the kills of as many civilians as they can. Naturally if it's otherwise a no win situation, the enemy will never ever tire out or run out of resources, than yeah go out in a blaze of glory. >:D

I could see this Chaos offering Nigel power to truly strike back at Luna and if he were to accept then he'd go over to the side of Chaos. And I mean truly joining the side of Chaos, Nigel wouldn't become a mere pawn but he'd be a serious contender.
Or Chaos could just straight up taint/corrut Nigel and use him, thus he'd simply be a pawn then.

On the other hand, if the ones wanting to be guardians - like Nigel - are doing it for the wrong reason. She may be rejecting them for two reasons I can see. 1. They may never reach their full potential as they are never truly in tune with their deity and therefore will not be strong enough (regardless of how much training they have received) to be able to withstand the onslaught of Chaos physically or mentally. 2. If not in tune with their their deity because they are becoming Guardians for the wrong reasons, Chaos could use that to turn the Guardian into an agent of Chaos, which would be even more detrimental to them.
But the question was not about the Guardians, it was about followers. And I don't disagree some, if not most, are disenchanted with the Tree of Life and the other gods of the elements. That being said, we see, or it is at least hinted at, that the village that Chili comes from is still filled with faithful follower's of the Tree of Life. But, is the strength of the Tree of Life and the others directly proportionate to the number of people that believe in then? Slender stated that "We couldn't do a thing even when there was seven of us, and in the prime of our powers!" So what is causing the waning of their power. Also you could as what was causing the waxing of their power to start with if they had a time when they were in their "Prime." Is Chaos winning over follower and turning them against the gods of the elements?
Also there another things that bother me. They say their number is 7. There are 5 of them in the meeting. They only state "Ivialli won't be here today" and that Arala was the "first." This can only hint that 2 of their ranks are either dead or gone (presumably over to the side of Chaos.) If you go by the jeweled decoration in the center of the table, 2 stones do not shine. Does that represent death or that they have fallen from the light and joined Chaos. If the gods of the elements need Guardians to protect them does that not insinuate they may be powerful and long lived, but not immortal? Or simply does it mean that only a god can kill a god and the Guardians are simple a shield to get around?

I think the implication is that they will die. Now, looking even deeper at this. they are turning away guardians being offered up due to fear and panic? But they are also clearly turning away guardians who don't meet stringent requirements.
It's no small wonder they are 'losing' the cosmological battle if they screen their warriors for all possibility of a personality xD
