With a heavy suitcase in his hand and a backpack over his shoulder, Limon stood in front of the campus’ stately main gateway to take a breather. The rising sun, which still was hidden behind a thick blanket of clouds, imbued them into a fiery sea of yellow and red and cast a picturesque light on the shadowy buildings on the ground, whose silhouettes loomed behind the high, wrought iron fence.
The fresh morning air, that whiffed through the fennec’s golden yellow fur as he crossed the street, let him shiver in his short-sleeved shirt. A throng of excited students pushed through the black iron gate, which he was about to pass as well. With reverence Limon read the inscription high above his head which was artfully enwrought into the steel between the massive, brick-build pillars. In golden lettering it displayed the name of the here domiciled institute, "Westport University."
Mom and Dad had offered to drop him off on his first day, but for one Limon found it a bit embarrassing to let his parents drive him to university, and for another thing this was a matter the young fox had and wanted to do alone. It was time for him to become independent and to live his own life! Moving out from home was a big and frightening step to take for sure, but also an important one that offered many new opportunities.
Henceforth Limon’s new home would be the local dormitory, which he was about to head to, to store away his stuff. Mom and Dad didn’t live far from the campus – Limon’s parental home lay in a suburb of the city – but it was still an outlandish feeling to set foot into this unknown, new and confusingly big place with the knowledge that he would live, learn, eat and sleep here for the years to come.
To be able to visit the university, Limon had to leave a lot of his old friends from school behind that followed other goals after their graduation. This hasn’t been easy for him, but it was inevitable. Though, even this loss bore the chance to forge new friendships. If you will, this could be a completely fresh start for the little fox!
The campus was large and teemed with eager freshmen that moved into their new quarters, signed in to courses, explored the grounds, got to know each other and wore the same overwhelmed expression as Limon. Eventually, after a little search, he still managed to find his assigned room number 206.
With the key that got handed over to him, he unlocked the door and at first only stuck his big, long ears through the open crack before he carefully entered the room. Except from the fading din from the hallway, it was dead quiet inside. The air was fuggy and the curtains still closed, so Limon switched on the light. As the messy bed, the stuffed cabinets and the crammed desk indicated, this room was already occupied. And judging by Limon’s sensitive nose not just since this morning!
Inherently it was a nice double room with one bed and desk for each and enough storage space for everything a student could need. Showers and restrooms were down the hall. And, aside from its occupant’s belongings, the accommodation was clean and also fairly spacious. All in all quite reasonable, Limon adjudged.
With long arms the small fennec hauled his big case towards his yet unmade bed and put it down with a groan, before he parted the curtains and opened the windows wide to let in fresh air. Since the room was on the second floor, he had a nice view over the university’s copious, greened backyard and the sports facilities behind that with the small stadium in front of the horizon.
When suddenly the door lock got unbolted behind him again, Limon’s highly subtle fox ears twitched. He turned around to see who came in. The fox was a little nervous, since all morning already he had been wondering who his future roommate might be and whether they would get along well? Judging by his ‘interior style’ he certainly seemed to be quite chaotic. As the door swung open, Limon’s outsized ears folded back in a mixture of astonishment and dread.
This project has been in the making for over a year already and I'm happy to announce that it is finally done now and ready for you to enjoy! The roughly 22,500 word strong novella follows Limon through his early days at university and centers around the exciting acquaintances he makes there. Do I need to mention that some of the fennec's experiences are going to be x-rated? Anyway, read for yourself and find out what lies ahead for Limon during this buoyant time of his University Life!
