The author of both works is Kenji Miyazawa. And the character designer for the movie is Hiroshi Masumura. His cat characters go well with Kenji's works. Incidentally, Hiroshi Masumura is also the original writer. There is also a movie by him. If you haven't seen his movie "アタゴオルは猫の森(Atagooru is a Forest of Cats)", I recommend you to watch it at least once.
