Sonic: My Way

Bringing up the rear in my little experiment to draw the main cast of Sonic in my own way, it's the Blue Blur's edgy doppleganger, Shadow~

When it came to Shadow, obviously he was just going to look like an edgier version of my Sonic, emo hair swoop and all!~ Still, wanted Shadow to be unique, so while Sonic is vain and always wearing designer clothes-(what little he does wear)-Shadow wears an odd plug suit type thing ala Evangelion or Trigun to have the look of an escaped biological experiment. I feel it helps him to seem more alien and artificial, something that was literally made in a lab and has only had access to this one suit for years. In addition, I wanted to have uniformity with his and Sonic's shoes. Just a little extra to make them similar to each other, with color inverted shoe, this is mainly just because I've never liked Shadow's jet shoes. I don't know, they just kinda feel like they take away from his innate super speed? Just let him run like Sonic or float on his own. The jet shoes make him seem like he needs assistance to get up to Sonic's speed, like he had training wheels on or something! At least that's how I feel about it. So far, this is the one design I'm most on the fence about, it may take me drawing him a few more times to hammer it all out but this at least gets the idea across!

Otherwise, in terms of personality, I like to think of him as being far more harsh and cruel then he was in Sonic Adventure 2, where he was more aloof and apathetic. I feel like there should be no humanity in him... which I guess makes sense as he's a hedgehog; you get what I mean! I just think it works better for a being that can only remember thoughts of revenge, plus it helps to further offset him from Sonic who's constantly upbeat and arrogant as well as Robotnik's more comical nature as a villain. Besides that I rally don't see much reason to change his initial story. I always thought it fine and while I may get flack for this, I'm fine if he never came back after SA2. His story was complete, he has no real purpose afterward and giving him robot clones and dealings with aliens just to make use of him is really dumb. Let him be remembered as a decent villain that changed in the end. Sonic's already got what, three robot dopplegangers? Not to mention all the other evil twins and weird variations from the comics? We don't NEED another one, even if he is probably the best designed one of the lot.

So, yeah. That's it. I'm sure I'm draw these designs again but I've done everyone I set out to do. My interest in the Sonic games kind of waned after SA2, so I only really care about the characters from those games. Cream and Vanilla were just extras I wanted to try and Sally and Blaze were just because I was commissioned to do them. Now, should someone commission me to draw others in my own style, that's a different story and who knows? Maybe I'll get a wild hair and try some others. I do actually like Big the Cat and Team Chaotix, but as is my only real goal was the main cast of Sonic Adventure 2 (plus Amy) and I figure why not conclude it on the anniversary of Sonic Adventure 2~
