The first dragon OC I kept. Nocturne's prototype name was Rockslide, due to him being a striped earth dragon.
I know the colours make it seem more like a water dragon, but I swear it's only to make it look menacing. The very first concept was grey, black and teal. The wings had a hexagon sorta pattern to them, but I scrapped that for simplicity.
Speedy, my first main, used to have Nocturne as a mount, but I gave it to Nowy instead. He also had a rival like Speedy name Medatel. Same species, but orange with magnetic crystals/minerals. A friend of mine suggested his current name due to the colouration and I think it fits more. You'd meet this dragon at a rocky and deserted area at night.

Oooo a dark night drago :0c
Are there any differences in the dragons' appearance depending on sex or gender?
Also, since they live in a sandy area, I'm guessing they mainly attack at night for food and such.

I actually have made a 2nd dragon which is of the same species as Nocturne, but I didn't make a ref sheet for her yet (a lot of these ref sheets are already outdated again, need to update them sometime) She has a contrasting colour to Nocturne. Her name is Sol and she has orange, black and white scales with a reddish membrane for her wings. She is active at day and prefers to live in orangish, reddish deserts.
There aren't big differences depending on sex. Mostly the blue hue, eye colour and wing membrane can vary from species to species. The placement of the stripes and horns can also be altered from individual to individual. Once you see Sol you can see a 2nd design on how you can play around with the identifying traits.
You can sorta see it like a nightfury species, with the lightfury (Sol) being a sub species.
Nocturne prefers to hunt at night, eating mostly rocks with minerals and rarely meat whenever he gets lucky. During the day he sleeps in burrows or digs himself into the sand.

Honestly, I can't blame Nocturne. The few times I went to the beach, burrowing my feet in the sand was so comfortable.
Thank you for the cool info! Is it okay if I try drawing one?

What I get is that you want to make your own character based on the species? I wouldn't mind! I'm not fond of the concept that you aren't allowed to make characters based on someone else's fictional species. So go bonkers and have fuuuun~
